Chief Delphi Mobile App?

I searched the forums and couldn’t find a thread or any mentioning at all.

Has anyone given any thought to creating a iPhone (Android, Windows phones) Chief Delphi app? I know I would love to be able to check on recent thread activity and post replies while I’m away from my laptop.

The only problem I see is all the accident reports citing the cause as “Checking Chief Delphi on cellphone while driving”!

^^^ (please don’t do this)

There are already a couple of iOS apps (e.g. ForumRunner) that work with special forum extensions. I don’t know how much work it would take to integrate such an extension into Chief Delphi.

Well i’m not much of an App developer but i know a few Computer Science graduate students here at LSU that could work something out.

Tapatalk (or a similar service/product) would be the best solution. It’s a free plug-in for vBulletin, and on the phone-side, supports iOS, Android, Blackberry, and Nokia. The iOS and Android apps are $3, but that allows you to also browse and post on any other Tapatalk-enabled forum (if you’re a member of them).

I don’t know if it supports the version of vB that CD is running now, though.

What’s wrong with just using your browser. I can read and reply with my phone. Except for data fees it seems to work fine. What would you want an app to do? Maybe a widget that keeps updated is the only reason I come up with.

There is a huge variety of devices out there, and CD may not display/function properly or optimal on all the devices. An app allows that. And yes, you also have the widgets, too.

Can you read this my browser works just fine. Why do you need an app?

This was sent from my year old DROID.

I will agree with you on this. I have browsed CD on iphones, itouches, phones, and even zunes with no problems.

Sent from my Zune!

I agree with you guys in the fact that you can use your browser on your smart devices. I have an iphone4 and I can do so just fine. It was just a fun thought that we could have a mobile apps with updates shown above the apps (just like the Facebook apps) and we wouldn’t need to navigate to the ChiefDelphi page every time we want a short update on things.
Basically the idea was for simplicities sake. Lord knows most of us get lazy at some point and do not want to type in chiefdelphi.com 100 times a day.

Does the phone browsers keep your place of when you last logged in and which threads you have read?

thanks for the input

All that is really needed is a mobile version of the site (maybe just the forums portion of the site) that provides a little better layout for use on a small phone screen. All an app would be doing is taking the current stuff CD displays and displaying it a bit differently… and you’d have to write a different app for every mobile OS (blackberry, iOS, Windows mobile, Android, etc…). Doing it as a mobile site would get you 99% of the way there for everyone, all at once.

Agreed. CD doesn’t pull up well on my phone’s browser, to the point where I don’t really check it on my phone.

Granted, starting January 10th, I’ll be back at school, and I’ll be able to check it daily. coughPracticallyevery15minutescough Still, would be nice.
