Classmate network issues?

Hello Chief Delphi. Today, we discovered that whenever we connected the KOP Classmate to the network at the place we meet, the network speed dies, and occasionally, it kicks other computers off the network entirely. It’s not imperative that we connect the classmate to our network, as we use a different network for connection to the robot, but it’s just a curious issue. Has anyone else had this issue? And if so, have you found a solution?

During the beta test, I had a similar problem when I ran the DS software on my network at home. I reported it, but it didn’t affect anyone else.

I suspect that certain consumer level routers aren’t able to keep up with the traffic that the DS software puts out.

Makes sense, thank you for the quick reply and helpful information.

I’ve had the same experience at home myself.
Made it hard to cruise CD for awhile.

I have the DS on my home network and it has no noticable impact on performance. Perhaps it is just a difference in network hardware, but it seems unlikely. The traffic generated by the driver station is not very taxing at all. 50 packets a second is nothing compared to lots of common traffic such as downloading a file or browsing large web pages. Even with a robot talking back, it’s only 100 kilobytes / sec.

We had a few issues with this over the weekend, the students were losing communications with the robot while the rest of the team (about 10-15 other computer) were on the network. When only the robot and the ClassmatePC were on the network the losing comms issues seemed to go away.

We are planning on doing further testing later this week, if this is true we might just have to tether the robot during build season.

PS. The router we are using is from the 2009 KoP.
