ClickUp for discussion?

ClickUp (free) users: Is anyone using ClickUp alone for both task management AND discussion?

I’m a new lead mentor for a young team. I am considering software for team discussion and task/project management. I was planning to start using Slack and just realized that ClickUp has chat as well. I’m sure Slack has more advanced features in many ways, but could ClickUp provide this well enough? One less thing to manage and use could be worth it.

In the free Clickup there aren’t really user permissions, so anyone can make any chat. They are all visible, so that’s good. We would need to bound each other instead of the software limiting us.

I’m curious what other ClickUp users think. Thanks!

We sort of use it both ways. I’ll explain:

For actual discussion of most team communications, we use our team Slack Pro account and it’s various sub-team channels, which is great at getting announcements out, free-wheeling discussions of team ideas and issues, etc. So in one sense, we don’t use the ClickUp discussion function for everything.

However, we do use ClickUp extensively for task management and anything to do with that (including things like inventory and ordering, task assignment, task and project details, and any other discussion related to the listed tasks) gets discussed using that function of ClickUp.

It’s actually pretty efficient to do things that way, since it means those kind of discussions are generally confined to those concerned with that particular task, while more general discussions take place on the various sub-team channels or the general channel of the Slack. At least, it works well for us and keeps everyone informed but not bothered by discussions they don’t really want or need to worry about.

Thanks for the insights.
Related question, was the team already using PM software or a system before adopting ClickUp?

My team started using ClickUp over the summer and it’s been working great. My team has always struggled with organization but ClickUp has helped a lot because we can assign tasks to individuals or let someone own a task. We haven’t tried to use it for discussion and opt for Email and Discord instead but I’m sure it would work fine. I would strongly recommend ClickUp to any team that needs an organization tool.

We actually tried using the Clubhouse (now Shortcut) PM application the season before we adopted ClickUp, but found it too cumbersome for our use. Before that, we really didn’t have a set project management process since the team was pretty small then and almost everything could be managed on a personal, ad hoc basis. Once we got large enough (basically over 20 active members) that really didn’t fly anymore, so we moved to having real project management.
