Climber in a Box Theoretically Above Extension Limit

Hello! Last year, our team purchased a 2-stage climber which we plan to use for this year’s competition. However, the climber fully extended would be above the 4 ft extension limit. Are we still able to use the climber if we do not extend it beyond 4ft during competition, or will we have to convert it to a 1-stage climber?

You are allowed to theoretically extend as much as you want, you just can’t in-game.

Yes, but to clear inspection I believe you must demonstrate that you have limited a mechanism physically or programmatically so that it doesn’t over-extend during a match

One of my old teams knows about this first hand

We had to disable a mechanism where we couldn’t prove that to the satisfaction of the inspector.

What @SciborgBotanist6076 is saying here is the truth…

The easy way is to put too little cord inside for the hook to go above 48 inches. I still recommend a limit switch or encoder so you don’t hit the hard stop, at least not under power.

You can cut down the individual stages so it does not extend above the limit even at full extension, this would also make the climber lighter and more compact. Alternatively you can simply cut down the rope which drives the climber to keep it from uncoiling more than 48 inches. This effectively acts as a hard stop for the winch by keeping the spool from unwinding further.
