CNC troubles

My team has a CNC router that we are struggling to get to it work right. We have an issue where the CNC will drill down twice as far as we tell it to in cam. Our issues started when we switched from mach3 to mach4.

What CNC router is it? How are you controlling it? Why did you switch from mach3 to mach4?

avid cnc, we’re controlling it with a computer, and we switched to mach 4 because the laptop that had mach 3 completely died and our head coach got mach 4 on a new laptop

Are you using avid CNC’s mach4 distribution? What avid config do you have? Is your Z-axis motor plugged into the correct port on your controller? are your units in mach4 and CAM the same?

Does the physical distance the CNC travels match the distance the display shows?
For example to the commands

G0 Z1
G0 Z2

Does the CNC move upward 1 unit? Does the DRO display match that movement?

Call AVID CNC. I have on multiple occasions called and talked directly to one of their engineers who quickly helped me troubleshoot our older CNC router parts machine (that we bought from AVID before they changed names). Good Luck!

Mach 3, and presumably Mach 4, has a configuration value that describes how far a single step on the motor makes the axis move, which is a function of the gear ratio coming out of the motor and the thread of the lead/ball screw. You should check that configuration value to see if it is accurate.

If the DROs on the screen are matching what your CAM says, but the physical motion doesn’t match the DROs, it is likely this issue

Definitely contact Avid about this. You may need to downgrade to Mach3.

Correct if you can there is a setting where you input steps and measure actual machine movement i went from m3 to m4 i had to re configure steps to match actual machine movement you can do it use a steel rule with your method of measure inch metric and a needle at the end of your spindle so you can measure your machine movements
