ok, will do… Thanks
So I realized that there was a free trial on mcafee and that had real time scanning, automatic updates, and a firewall. I turned off all three. Is this fine or do I risk getting a virus now?
You really shouldn’t ever have to connect your driver station computer to the internet. Updates can be downloaded to a flash drive on a different computer and copied over. Other than that, there’s no need to connect to the internet, so no way of getting a virus.
@AriMB Our Drivers station computer is the only computer we really have/use so that is the computer I am always using to program, go on chief delphi, etc. on the internet…
it is the one i am on now
should i reconnect the firewall?
That’s the reason why I recommend having a dedicated driver station laptop. The more you use the computer for other things, the more likely programs will be taking processing time away from the DS software; the more settings you’ll have to change to browse the internet vs connect to the robot; and the more likely you are to accidentally download a virus that slows your computer down.
I obviously don’t know much about your team or budget, but you can get a decent driver station computer for less than $300 (here, for example). If you attend one regional with 12 matches for $5000 and lose one match because of driver station problems, it’s already payed for itself. There’s a lot of good recommendations for your driver station in this whitepaper here.
Edit: while you’re on the internet, you should probably have your firewall and anti-malware software on. When connected to the robot, it should be turned off.
I don’t think my team will be able to get a whole other computer just for driving… What should I do to diagnose the problem on this computer?
The problem is likely the McAfee softawre either trying to block your communication with the robot (thinking that it’s an attack) or trying to update and holding up the network traffic. Disable that, try to drive the robot, and see if that fixes the problem. Let us know what you find.
okay, thanks
so we turned off McAfee firewall, real time scanning, and the automatic updater for McAfee and windows 10 on the device.
I also tested it over radio, Ethernet, and USB all to the following result:
We are still having connectivity issues, where the most recent time it was connected to the robot:
-
the lights on the bot still had uneven blinking, where every once in a while a blink was an extra second or two longer (like it was temporarily turning into a solid non-blinking light)
-
the motors on our robot randomly stall for a second each stall. (they are “skippy” and this causes problems with the performance of the bot)
-
when we interact with a controller causing a motor to work, it loses more packets and the trip time also increases
Looking back at your prior messages, you indicated that it looked to be a background application on the computer causing problems with the connection. I now think this to be further true because we tested it with a robot from a prior year on this years drive computer (the one with the supposed problem) and the old robot glitched as stated above as well. I know for a fact that our old robot was not having these problems in the past, so it means it is something wrong with the computer.
I checked the task manager to see what was running in the background, but I do not know what should and should not be running… Therefore, I have attached both a list of processes and a list of currently running services below
Here is the processes currently running on the computer:

Also, looking back at the riolog, the last two messages of the last test run of the new robot were:
12:26:44.584 PM
Info Communications Timeout: 721 Input Voltage Brownouts: 0.
12:26:51.966 PM
Info roboRIO: Disk Free 113 MB, Memory Free 85 MB. DS Laptop: CPU 48% Batt 36%.
I was not sure what the first of these two messages meant, but looking at old riologs from a few years ago, they did not have any messages like this, however in a 15 minute span of being connected to the robot it had around 400 messages, indicating me every few times there was an input voltage brownout. What is this and should I be concerned? We also had a fully charged battery (around 11.8v-12v in the robot during this test run) Also I am not sure if this is a related issue to the first issue, because the first issue happened on two robots with two different batteries, and as I said neither issue was happening two years ago with the steamworks bot I was testing with or last year with our power up bot.
Sorry for the long message lol (it just kept getting longer and longer)
Thank you very much and any help would be greatly appreciated as the problem is a nuisance and makes it harder to do things with our bot.
Your processes and services look all in order, and you’re not using too much PC CPU/RAM.
Can you actually upload a dashboard log file from one of your tests to here (each log is two files)? It might be helpful to take a closer look at the log itself to see if that gives any hints. It’s hard to see all of the graphs from the image further up in the thread, and there are no details about the events and warnings.
okay, will do…
Here are the two files for the two most recent tests. the most recent one is a shorter time span than the first, so there is more data to analyze in the older one I think…
also just to let you know so you don’t wonder what it is, anytime it says:
1 ramp
or
2 ramp
it is just a string output. I had it print out that string for every time it completed a specific action (for debugging purposes)… So, when I hold down a button on my controller, it prints that string every iteration of the loop that runs the action on the robot.

Thanks!
I hate to say that I don’t actually see any problems in your logs. There are a few blips, and two times where the watchdog triggers for two seconds, but nothing that would cause what you’re describing.
At this point, I would just try to get someone with experience diagnosing problems like this co come to your shop in the next few days. Or try to bring your robot to them. It will be a lot easier to diagnose this in person than over the internet. I don’t know where you’re located because you don’t have a team in your profile, but if you reach out to your local Regional Director they can probably put you in touch with someone who can help.
Sorry I can’t be more helpful.
That is fine… You were more than helpful!
One last question though (if you don’t know, its fine, you’ve helped a lot)…
What is a Input Voltage Brownout. In one of my tests from yesterday I got 721 of them… could this be in relation to the problem and does it relate to the battery or the computer?
Thanks and if you don’t know its fine I just thought I would ask just in case, but you’ve been very helpful!
Our driver was having a similar problem with a huge amount of dropped packets, and lost comms intermittently.
He said he switched from Dynamic to Static IP and some of the issues went away. Have you tried this (if you are on dynamic)?
how do I check/switch which type if IP I am on?
We’re having the same issue with dropped packets and lost comms on the driver station, I’ve briefly discussed it here: https://www.chiefdelphi.com/t/frc-95-the-grasshoppers-2019-build-thread/
That’s when the voltage coming into the roboRIO is too low so it shuts off all motors to protect itself. That could definitely be causing your problems if it’s happening that often. Usually it’s caused by either a bad/undercharged battery or loose connections in your main power wiring (everything between the battery and PDP).
