My macbook constantly overheats and I was wondering if you have any solutions. I was going to buy a cooling pad but I figured I’ll post here first and look at alternatives. Could it be the fact that my room is already really hot? (i think that is because of the computers though) The computer gets so hot to the point I can barely touch it. What would you recommend?
Download smcFanControl, and create a new profile with much higher fan speeds. I use this on both my iMac and my MBP, and they usually run at about 20C cooler now than on the previous Apple default settings.
Make sure your CPU heatsink and fans are not clogged up with dust and dirt. A little compressed air does a good job (be-careful of static electricity).
I did that, I took my computer apart and cleaned out everything. I was careful and avoided static electricity, I was grounded.
I’ll try this and see if it helps.
You can also try reapplying the thermal compound. Apple does a terrible job ad pretty much just lathers the heatsink with some cheap paste. My macbook was running hot so i cleaned up the inside and reapplied the thermal paste, I see about 10 degrees cooler temperatures. It still runs warm around 64 degrees Celsius browsing internet, using excel, and listening to music, and around 75 doing anything involving flash.
It has cooled it down by quite a bit.
I run a lot more than that at a time, which could be the cause of my overheating problem, I would reapply it if I had time, but right now I don’t. Thanks for the info though. I think I need to get something to get more air to my computer. Right now it is sitting on a wooden desk surrounded but another computer to one side and a monitor to the other.
I have removed a computer from my desk which has allowed more airflow and cooled my macbook down, I think I am going to go look at a cooling pad to get even more airflow. I will also try reapplying the thermal compound. Thank you all for your help.
