Confusion On Bringing Our Own Rope

My team is slightly confused on the rope, specifically on the specifics for if we bring our own. Does anyone know if there are any specific rules on the rope, such as a maximum/minimum diameter or if any material is not allowed. Any help is much appreciated.

All the information that you would need is in the rules. I suggest you look there. Also make sure you look through all the team updates to see the changes that have been made.

Rule I04

My team coach has asked us to find examples of what other teams are using if they are planning on bringing their own rope, if anyone wouldn’t mind giving us an examples it’d be greatly appreciated.

Ratchet strap, poly cord, “actual” rope, etc.

Man, if FIRST only provided a large book of rules where we can check for those details  ::rtm::

OK, enough sarcasm. The rope rules are in I-04

Look at the manual, look at all the team updates, look at the FRC Q&A, and browse the numerous threads on chief delphi. Your questions have been answered several times over.

Even if you see what other teams are using, read the rules and make sure it meets all the rules. Inspectors rely on rules only.

EDIT: GDC is **probably **seriously thinking of banning ropes from **future **FIRST competitions or not give option for teams to bring their own rope for field element. There are more Q&A about rope than any other role/specs.

… What?

Yes inspectors rely on rules, so don’t give false statements to a team that already has trouble reading the rules, confusing them even more.

IMHO, if a team is planning to climb a rope, they will bring their own.

The general consensus seems to be to attach velcro to the rope. if you plan on doing that, make sure you read all the rules and Q&A.

Trying to cut through the crud, because your poorly researched and asked question has quite honestly brought out close to the worst CD has to offer: The rope rules have been among the most demanding subject for the GDC/answer team this year. Go get the LATEST version of the rules, and search the Q&A for ROPE rules. These have changed, or at least shifted, twice a week, except for TU#6. There are very specific requirements for length, width, loops, knots, the RETAINING FEATURE, and the mechanism by which the rope is held together by all those small strands, which have evolved over build season. Metal and non-fibrous materials are very definitely out. After you’ve worked through all these issues, feel free to ask questions about what you still don’t quite understand.

Edit: In response to the previous post – YES, we are planning to bring our own, and NO, we are not planning to have any velcro on our rope. We have found a solution that works on unmodified COTS rope and strap, which is readily available and should be familiar to FRC teams.

Hah. If only it were that simple.

I would say that about half the teams out there that climb will be trying to climb the field ropes. Unfortunately, they’ll tend to be the less-competitive teams. The more competitive teams will naturally have their own ropes, or multiple (identical?) ropes.

Anyways… I think the GDC made a slight mistake putting the rope in the Inspection section of the Manual. Shoulda been in Robot, maybe more people would be reading it. Be that as it may, OP, I recommend reading all of the Inspection section (Section 9) before Bag Day. You will probably find some stuff in there that you need to know, not just the rope rules. (Oh, and BTW: Please make sure you’re reading the most current version. I04 has changed in almost every update this year.)
