Crimping tool for Neo sensor wires

We have a Neo 550 motor where one of the sensor wires came out of the connector. Rev has been awesome with helping us. We plan to fix the wires so we can use the motor in offseason projects and so we can learn a new wiring technique. The directions and link to the crimping tool are here..

Unfortunately the tool is out of stock. We are looking at purchasing either This version or one from Iwiss and are hoping to learn from your collective wisdom - is one tool better than the other? Huge cost difference, is the extra cost worth it? While we won’t use this on a competition robot we are working on ensuring our electrical connections don’t fail. Quality and reliability are our key requirements.

When I have the option, I always choose a ratcheting crimper. My go-to for the JST PH contacts has been this one from Amazon:

The “brand name” changes by the month but the crimper in the photo is the same as mine.

Doesn’t help with your particular issue, but you can also get pre-crimped wires and bare PH housings to assemble your own extensions without a crimper. They come with the full rainbow of colors, so you can make pretty close to a matching mate.

Adding more connections isn’t always advisable because technically you’re adding a failure point (and for power more resistance), but given the potential fragility of JST connectors, you can also use those kits to build a sacrificial extension off the spark max so you’re not plugging and unplugging from it directly.

+1 for ratcheting crimper with adjustable force.

That said, we also bought a ton of REV’s extender cables and have done some splicing with those rather than fuss over crimping new connections.

Crimping a new connector may be the most robust fix, but in a pinch you can use the compatible JST “KR” series connectors, which connect to the wires without crimps:

I might explore this but I do want to reduce the number of connections to reduce failure points.

The IWiss crimper is one we are looking at. Looking for feedback from people that have it as we’re comparing it to another one. One aspect of the other one we like is the size is labelled on the tool which does not seem to be the case with the IWiss.

Don’t do it. Getting those crimps correct is an absolute PITA. Get some pre-crimped wires from Amazon and just splice the wires together.

Our team switched to wago connectors for literally everything and it’s been amazing :star_struck:.

WAGOs are soooo awesome for power wires and even for CAN, but how do you use them for the little 24awg encoder wires? I’m not sure there’s a way to avoid the JST connection since it’s built in to the sparkmax.

So sorry, I read the question wrong. We use the pre crimped wires. Im we have also had that problem for the sensor wires, sorry!

Love Wagos for our power wires. We had some issues with higher gauge (i.e. smaller) wires but think the strand count wasn’t high enough for the application. Specifically though it is the JST connector for the motor controller we are working on solving.
