cRIO configuration issue- serial connection to laptop

We’re trying to set up the serial connection for the cRIO. We can get a terminal window open inside wind river and it tells us that it’s connected, but when we turn on/ reset the cRIO, it doesn’t give us the little message indicating a successful boot that 5.4.1.3 says we should get. We’ve set up the terminal window exactly as described in section 5.4.1 of the control system manual. We’ve got the console-out dipswitch in the on position. We’ve also made sure the null modem cable we’re using is good. Does anyone know what’s wrong?

Are you using a regular serial connection or a USB to serial converter? I have seen a similar problem in PCs that do not have the serial connection.

If I recall correctly, you must use a null modem cable between your computer and the cRIO instead of a standard serial cable. It’s just like making a serial connection between two normal computers.

Yeah, we got a null modem cable. That’s why we’re so surprised it’s not working. We’ve also checked all the settings many times to make sure the connection’s set up right: 9600,8,1,none,none, and the right com port. Any other common errors?

Can you confirm that the serial port on the computer is not broken?

Try to connect to the cRIO with a different computer with hyperterminal

We plugged in our null modem to the cRIO, ran Hyperterm on the PC with COM1: 9600,8,n,n as you suggest with the console dipswitch set to ON and it worked first time. Ensure your serial port is enabled in the BIOS, enabled in Device Manager and no one has tinkered with the IRQ’s etc.

I would also recommend testing with another PC.
