I wanted to take a minute and give a shout out to the team Captain from 2960, Automation Nation. they were the Captain for Alliance #5 on Daly. in the Quarterfinals they made the decision to sub themselves out for the back up bot (141). the reason for this was that our alliance was getting outscored on fuel and the backup had a better side auto. this swap enabled our alliance to get the 2 rotor auto and win the rubber match and move to the semifinals. I was really impressed by that young mans decision, how many people as captains would be willing to take themselves out of a match for non mechanical issues. Even though we ran into the buzz saw that was the eventual event champion, I am proud to have played matches with someone that showed that kind of strategic thinking. thanks for the great time 2960, 2164, 3620 and 141, it was a pleasure playing with all of you.
We were on the other side (shooting the fuel). I noticed the 2 rotor auto, but didn’t see the sub. Well played!
Watching the teams load in to the field, in the cheering section we didn’t know if there had been a problem with the 2960 bot or if it was just an amazingly gutsy call by the alliance captain. There hadn’t been a sign of problems in the previous match, so I probably missed half the match explaining–no, gushing–to my in-laws how amazing this was, if an alliance captain made a strategic decision to sub for their own bot. My hat is off to the captain. (And I’m glad it paid off, and earned our alliance two more amazing matches against the world champs.) Much respect.
I think 6009 did on Curie as well, though I couldn’t tell why they did it.
2960 is a class act and a smart captain! Thank you to them again for leading us to our first blue banner at Penn High School. Kudos to them for recognizing the need and acting on it!
66 had fun competing against all 4 of your alliance teams in Daly quarterfinals. Congrats on advancing to Daly semifinals!
Drive Coach and Alliance Captain from Team 6009 here. We subbed ourselves out because the other bot, 2609, could cycle slightly faster than us because we wanted to try and stop your four rotors. It didn’t work… But we did hit the 2 rotor auto unlike the first match. They were pre close matches and mistakes made up the difference
I remember seeing that 573 did this from the 8 seed in 2015 at Champs. They assembled an alliance with 3 teams that had just the right components to compete for a divisional championship (2 good feeder station stackers, 1 landfill stacker with can grabbers), and then they sat themselves out. Unfortunate issues in the second match caused them to have a low average score unfortunately, but I admired them very much for that decision.
I just wanted to add that this decision by 6009 showed a great deal of maturity and awareness of the situation at the time, and should definitely be commended! Choosing to do something for the good of the alliance (even if it means sitting out a match) is strategically smart, and it’s rare to see an alliance captain make that decision about themselves.
It was great to play with you in elims, and we look forward seeing you around the Ontario district again next year!
Couldn’t have said it any better! Thank you for letting us play!
Yes, 6009 - cyberheart was a great alliance captain to work with. It was great to be able to play in an elimination game as the 4th member but hard to not win that match for the captain. Thank you for having faith in us! We look forward to playing with you in 2018. Thanks 4039 - Makeshift and 234 - Cyber Blue.
