OK, since we were starting to take away from the Palm Pilot Software thread, here’s our own little thread for developing some sort of Dashboard Program for either of the two Sharp Zaurus units that are for sale in America.
First of all, I do think that there are serial port drivers for the Zaurus, if you buy one of the serial port cables for it. I don’t have one, so I can’t confirm. If these drivers are indeed there (they should be, as they’re in any regular linux kernel, no?) then that would be a big help to this little project.
Second, does anyone have any experience in developing for linux or the Zaurus units? If so, maybe you could give a quick write up on how serial ports function under linux, and how to control them through C/C++ (I think this is the easiest program to use, but feel free to suggest others, as I don’t know much about other stuff for the Zaurus).
The last thing, does everyone who would use this run OZ with Opie? I know there are several other GUIs to use (PicoGUI is one) and I don’t know if that would affect development at all.
Those are all the problems / existing solutions I can think of, now we just need to figure out how to develop this into an actual program.
On a side note, I do believe that Joe Ross is working on a console driver program to tokenize and load PBASIC code, to work under both Windows and Linux. Maybe, could we take this and somehow use this to make a Tokenizer for the Zaurus? Maybe next year, even take that and adapt it to whatever the new language is going to be as well? Just some random thoughts.
