I just advanced as an FTC deans list finalist without my team. I did this last year too and found myself looking for more to do at worlds. I did student ambassador and it was really fun but I want a more active volunteer role. I don’t want to be required to volunteer for the full week though because I want to watch some of my friends matches. Any good positions I should volunteer for? Also are there callbacks or is it only based on essays for who wins?
Your judges were required to do a write-up on what they learned during your interview for the Worlds-level judges. The Worlds-level judging is done based on those notes and your original essay – no callbacks or second interview.
There’s usually a Dean’s List Finalist luncheon at Worlds that you will get information on from FIRST (via your coach/lead mentor).
Is the luncheon formal or do kids wear their team uniform?
The year I went to champs without my team as a Dean’s List Finalist was a blast. I did a little bit of everything: student ambassador, radio room monitor, load in/load out, field disassembly (on all six FRCFIRST Robotics Competition fields), and pretty much whatever else came my way. They were a lot of unglamorous roles, but fun in small doses and a taste of a lot of the different types of volunteer roles.
Age requirements have changed a bit since I was a student, so be sure to look into those. Consider volunteering for a different program than the one you participate in, too, if interested. If you want to do different roles different days, just note that when you sign up on the dashboard. If you want to be near the fields, consider field reset.
Not really. It used to be in a convention center/hotel ballroom, not sure if it still is, and many of the speakers, etc. will be dressed nicely, but it’s expected that you’re coming from either competing or volunteering and will be in your team or volunteer shirt. Some people may choose to dress up, but it will likely be a mix.
Volunteer to field reset - if all your friends are on the same division, even better.
It’s in the Hilton connected to the convention center this year. So it’s okay to wear team uniform?
Yes.
This is awesome! We are staying at the hotel and we have a DL semifinalist.
Great, thanks!
