On the program Dateline, June 30, 1999 Dean showed off his new invention. A special wheel Chair that will climb stairs and go over rough terrain.

Shades of last years competition, who is inspiring who?

go to dateline.msnbc.com for details.

Quite a program.

In the next few days I will try to post a picture and maybe a short video of this great invention.

Today’s Wall Street Journal, front cover of Market Place has a big article on the new wheelchair called IBOT. Dean co-developed it with Johnson & Johnson. Besides being able to climb stairs, it can also balance on two wheels (no casters) to raise the user up to eye level. It looks REALLY COOL. :-Dan

I’ll bet Dean didn’t have a 130 pound weight limit or a $425 credit line;
and I’m sure he isn’t using RNet’s or BASIC Stamps…

On the other hand, it does look like he kept it in the ‘box’.

The real amazing thing is that I heard Dean constrained himself to a kit of FIRST parts and a 6 week schedule when building his new invention? As Tom points out,
the machine appears to reside ‘in-the-box’, however does Dean have to meet the 130lbs weight limit with or without a person in the seat?
If Dean were to incorporate a steel cage around the device, next year we can get the referees much closer to the action. To you think Deans system would be able to compensate for a self inflicted cloths-lining on the 1998 field?

:wink:

Thank you for making this link available, it is wonderful. Until now I could only read about what I missed and I knew I needed to see it.

I really like Deans new invention. My Mom has been in a wheel chair for fourteen years of my life. I was four when she wasn’t able to walk anymore, and hardly remember when she was walking. I know how hard it is for handicap people to move around, and think Deans invention is a great thing.

Nothing personal against Dean, but don't forget that this invention came from DEKA. There are a whole bunch of very inventive, hard working folks that make things like this wheelchair possible. The folks that work for Dean are also deserving of alot of credit.

There were only about 20 people that worked on the wheel chair… They had a whole floor in DEKA for the project… No one but those 20 people knew what was on that floor… I had the opportunity to talk to 2 of those people at lunch a while ago… It was pretty cool…

At a recent demo, FIRST handed our copies of ‘Design News’ from back in 1993 when Dean was voted Engineer of the Year. Throughout the article there are mentions of his many accomplishments with Aut Syringe and DEKA. However, constantly popping up in Dean’s quotes was mention of a ‘secret project’ that would make everything else he had done ‘insignificant’ It’s just amazing to think that he has been devoting so much to this project for so long. When he said it had been 10 years in the making, it didn’t have an impact until know how truly long his brain had been churning.

…Amazing I say…
