Defense in Autonomous?

Hello! I know that some teams start the match in the opposing alliance’s goalie zone because they extend a high goal blocker to block some of the high goals in autonomous as well as later on in teleop. What I’m interested in finding out is if our robot can start in the opposing alliance’s goalie zone and then ram into some of the robots during autonomous to push them away and hopefully stop them from shooting. Thanks for any help or advice!

No, robots starting in the goalie zone can’t leave it, see rule G15:

G15
During AUTO,
A. a ROBOT starting in the white ZONE may not cross fully beyond the TRUSS
B. a ROBOT starting in its GOALIE ZONE must remain in contact with the carpet in its GOALIE ZONE.

Violation: FOUL. If contact with an opponent ROBOT, TECHNICAL FOUL.

Your answer is no.

No, its not allowed. You’ll be given a technical foul. A quick look at the auto rules would have cleared this up for you.

The rule book is really your friend. With the high point value of fouls, you really need to understand all the rules. Don’t complain about losing on fouls if you don’t read and understand the rules.

Now, what if a 56" long robot were constructed such that it would ram the opposing robots before fully moving beyond the truss? Would a foul be called?

It says the robot must remain in the goalie zone if they start there. With the current frame perimeters I would be impressed to see a robot ram a robot from the goalie zone.

A robot 56" long and only 1" wide would exceed the 112" maximum frame perimeter limit by 2". And would fall in it’s face or back probably immediately without added human or other mechanical support.

IMHO…Read the rules, and read them again, then attempt to work within both the spirit and the letter of said game rules. Spend less time on why the rules “seem unfair” to you personally. The rules (in the published rulebook), are your friend, not your enemy. (Unless your mission is to intentionally, or unintentionally violate them, or you do not study them, and therefore, do not even know them). In that case…You can be your own worlds worst enemy.

Understand first, that the GDC formulated each and every rule for a very good reason (some game specific, many safety related)…Even if we do not know the actual true reason behind each and every one, they are the rules currently in effect. Penalties are the result of (intentional or unintentional), violation.

OK. despite what the people have said above, the answer is yes as long as:
1> your robot maintains contact with the goalie area carpet and
2> the contact is in the bumper zone.

Say you had a 30" long robot and you extended a 20" extension both forward and backward. As long as the back one maintained contact with the goalie carpet and the front one contacted the other robot in the bumper zone, you would be legal.

Leaving the zone in not permitted. However, some accurate coding would allow you to move back an forth, between the confines of zone, in between the two one point goals. Perhaps a quick walk back and forth across the zone during autonomous would help block a shot or two.

Be certain however, when lining up your bot that its angle is correct. Many defensive bots have been fouled because there wheels facing the truss cross over the line while quickly moving back and forth. And penalties have been deciding may of the matches thus far.
