Detroit Einstein Announcer... Best ever?

The announcers were great… if you could actually hear them. My one major complaint about the Detroit venue was that in both locations, Cobo and Ford Field, it was extremely difficult to hear what the announcers were saying. The audio techs needed to up the volume by like 50% or more. It didn’t seem to matter where you were sitting either.

There were a few interruptions from the audience during speeches at Einstein, I think partially because no one could hear what the speakers were saying so they got board and started coming up with other entertainment (in the form of a few surprisingly effective paper airplanes).

Kori was on Tesla several different times over the competition. She was amazing. Each team was mentioned. The status of the vault was mentioned as the game progressed. Continuous match information called out smoothly so anyone can follow.

I think she could make 6 dead robots sound like a good match.:wink:

Still trying to figure out what was on the tablet/pad that she carries/referenced while she was making the call.

Probably using the game announcer tool. It shows a bunch of info on the teams currently playing in a Match but nothing with live scores. Great utility for the GAs.

Congratulations to Kori on this amazing accomplishment!! You guys should check out Houston Einstein of 2017 and give a listen to good ole Josh Goodman. Like Kori, he never leaves dead air. I have found it very hard to come by a GA that REALLY knows what they’re talking about. Again, congrats to Kori on this awesome opportunity!

This isn’t radio. Totally avoiding silence isn’t a good characteristic by itself. We have too many announcers who say nothing of substance just to say something. That isn’t alarming—this is a difficult craft, everybody is a volunteer, and few if any of them do this with enough regularity to dramatically develop their craft. That’s why somebody like Kori stands out.

If you’ve got something to add, say it. If not, stay out of the way and let us enjoy the match!

I’ve worked with Kori for the past few years, and I have no reservations in saying she is the best game announcer I have ever heard. Her delivery is crisp, clear, informational, exciting, and best of all, when she speaks you can hear her smile.
I was encouraged by the number of female MCs, GAs, FTAs, and other prominent roles throughout Detroit Champs.

We are very lucky to have Kori in the Midwest. She is very driven to describe the action on the field and tunes out everything else while on mic. I am able to watch from the scoring table and she puts all of herself into the job. Kori learned from the best, Mister First Dan Green.

I have to give a shout out to Dan at the desk as well. I have known Dan since his days on 469 and he is one of those great guys who grew up in First. I thought he did spectacular job which is saying a lot when you are working with Blair and Dave.

My favorite Kori memory was during a 2014 off-season event which I believe was one of the first times she volunteered as an announcer. She was announcing a match, mid-sentence, when she trips on a cable box and falls completely on the floor. She literally did not miss a beat of her sentence and even continued to announce while laying on the floor for the rest of the match. It was both hilarious and incredible to see.

Kori and Ryan are some of the best, most dedicated announcers in First and a pleasure to work around at any event!

Kori was great! I also really enjoyed the man who was announcing on Archimedes (don’t remember his name), and everyone at 5407 loves Rizzo from MAR.

I first heard Kori last year at Midwest and said then she was the best GA I’ve ever heard… and I’ve been doing this a long time! When I heard she was doing Einstein this year I was very excited!

Midwest is lucky to have her!!

Hi all!

It looks like most of the questions raised here were answered by members of the FIRST community who already know me, but I still wanted to jump in to acknowledge that I’m aware of this thread.

First, thank you all so much for your kind words. During the Einstein shows on Saturday, a few people directed me here and it was incredibly encouraging and reassuring to read.

An introduction: I’m Kori; I’m a science/engineering teacher in Chicago and involved with mentoring and volunteering for FTC and FRC. I was lucky enough to game announce 4 FRC events this season (thanks to IN and PNW for having me!) and be placed as the game announcer for Einstein Energy and Final, which was an incredible and new experience for me.

A few confirmations to questions: My formal announcing experience is all FIRST, but I credit a lot of my skills to a very improv-heavy internship I held during my undergrad as a demonstrator in a science museum. On my iPad, I use GA Tool from James Lockman, a fellow announcer. It’s been a huge help to announcers all over the world!

The whole GA/MC/production crew in Detroit was great to work with; I was particularly happy to have the opportunity to work alongside 3 wonderful female MCs–a record number of women on microphones at a championship.

Kori is amazing at this. I had the pleasure of going to University with her in Chicago, and being on the University’s robotics team with her, and the Midwest Planning committee, and working with FTC. She’s a wonderful young lady and gives as much of her time as she can to the students. I was really excited to hear her voice when I tuned into the finals on the blue alliance. A job super well done! She’s also done a great job handling some of the background voicing in championships before - it’s always fun to hear her voice. If you ever see her, ask her to say “And that’s 10 points for Griffyndor” on the mic :stuck_out_tongue:

I agree with this! Kori’s commentary on the Carson field last year was spectacular! It became a topic of conversation in my team’s stands how great it was. Everyone was raving about it.

I did enjoy Kori on Tesla, but I aslo am a big fan of ____________ (I call him the the bodda-bing bodda-boom guy). We see him in Michigan quite a bit and I do love his enthusiam. He certainly knows and loves the Michigan teams!
