Did anyone build a cargo shooter / launcher this year?

We decided not to build a shooter this year due to the variability in cargo and the relatively small holes on the rocket. However I was definitely expecting to see some teams try to pull it off with maybe a couple high level teams succeeding.

Did anyone try this year? How did it go?

Why do you think there’s no or very few cargo shooting robots?

I can think of a few teams from Minnesota that put some heat behind the cargo at close range…

You’re talking a 1" margin of error to send the ball bouncing in a random direction. Now add in that the ball could be a semi-random shape related to a sphere, instead of spherical. See also: Knuckleball.

At point-blank range, and into the Cargo Ship, there are a number of shooters. I’ve even seen a catapult be effective on the Cargo Ship. But once you go up, it just isn’t worth it. Knuckleballs are hard to predict where exactly they’ll end up.

Who had a catapult?

FTFY, just hope there isn’t enough power to knock a hatch off from the inside :smirk:

5124, West Torrance.

They also have a “utility arm”, good for multiple things involving hatch panels and assisted yeets.

5854 Glitch made a shooter robot, however it hasn’t been the most accurate so far particularly on the cargo ship. That could have more to do with the angle they’re shooting at though.

Yes, I’ve seen plenty of cargo shooters. As @EricH noted, their efficiency is roughly in inverse proportion to the distance they’re shooting.

We had 1/4 balls as failures, 1 zip tie fixed that and now its 1/15 failures. We fixed it at Aerospace Valley.

The yeets worked when the battery was good enough. Gear ratio was very borderline so i guess for the future we need to go a little overboard so that it would work on low battery.

My team 5686 has a robot that consistently shoots into the cargo ship and first level of the rocket. The geometry for the rocket shot was a pain but it basically rolls right in.

We did the same thing except for ours cant shoot for rocket. We have a fixed picot point for the pneumatic but if we could change that we could have shot in the rocket.

We can do it in theory. It’s just super sketchy and we leave the second and third levels to the pro’s.
