So this was a fun discovery this morning! There appears to be two different balls.
You can tell them apart by the ‘knurling’ pattern on the exterior surface.
Further testing required to determine if this makes an appreciable difference.
Quick test reveals that…yes. Huge difference in inflation pressure to achieve the same 16” dimension.
How will we know where and when each ball is used? Are they both used on the field at once? Maybe there is a reason they have put 2, I haven’t found anything in the rulebook about it.
Did you get two different ones in your kit(s)?
Both of ours seem to match pattern 2

Ours are both pattern 2 but are the color of pattern 1
Pattern 1 colour 1, received from a kickoff event in Orlando
Pattern 1 from Ontario Canada
Pattern 1 both from Orlando Kickoff.
This is what we have as well, From NY/LI kickoff.

I suspect this will be a complete non issue in reality. However I would like FIRST to acknowledge the difference.
Not sure if that counts as a luke warm take or not.
I got a little scared seeing the pressure difference initially, but then I remembered how many teams are gonna go shooterless.
But yeah, it would still be good to have FIRST give an official take on this.
edit: I’ve been looking at the other teams’ algae, and it seems like almost everyone got the first type of ball, so it’s likely that is the one used in events. Ok, I don’t think it’s gonna be that much of an issue then.
Why do you suspect this?
It is worth noting that there have been past cases of multiple versions of the same game piece, as recently as last year. Generally, the official word has been “the event could have either, and you should design a robot to handle the variance.”

How am i supposed to be a small shooter bot now?
I imagine there’s a randomness to what kits wind up at each kickoff.
Just figure out how many need to ship to each one (somewhere in the 45 range for LI) when 45 are are available to go to a pallet and shipping logistics are done it can go out. (International getting some priority for longer travel)

If anyone got the version 1 (straight lines) balls and wants to trade one for a version 2 curvy, let me know we are looking to have both to test with. I’ll happily pay for both shipments.
