When the time comes that there are districts in NE and CA, how cool would it be to have the winning alliances paired back together after championships for a showdown like a represent your region clash.
NE vs CA and MAR vs MI
and then the winners face off to show which region builds the strongest alliances.
I hope that many years down the line the FIRST championship becomes like this; a real clash of the best of the best divided by region
This is a really good idea, I’, interested in how you would balance the regions though as California, Michigan, and Canada would probably come out with far more powerful alliances than other regions mostly due to the population of teams, California probably has twice as many teams as most other states.
Well seeing as it would come down to the winners of the state or region championship it would be pretty fair I think despite different densities of teams.
2 powerhouses and a really solid 3rd robot.
The more district models that come up, the more interesting this becomes…
I’d like to see CA, NE, Canada, and the Northwest
I’m not quite seeing the point your trying to make, unless you’re just listing stats for the 3 regions I mentioned. Do you have the stats for other regions too? I’d be interested in seeing team populations for other areas.
Just listed the stats. Kind of replying to the end of your comment about Cali having 2x the teams. Threw in the teams per square mile to just show why Cali hasnt gone district just yet compared to why Michigan had.
Last I knew there was a team in Anchorage. Ad I know my number for Canada is really off but I dont know Canada geographically enough to separate the teams by region. More likely than not, the Western and Central teams in Canada would get broken into the Northwest and Minnesota districts when they happen.
I don’t think it is quite feasible for a Calgary team to be competing in a district with teams from Minnesota or, for example, Seattle. Taking a car from Calgary to Minneapolis takes 18 hours while a car to Seattle takes 11 hours according to Google Maps. The fact that they will need to cross the border will also make it very unappealing to many teams. It really defeats the purpose of the District system.
I included Michigan in the list because I knew it had almost as many teams as California, I would still be willing to bet though that Cali has 2x as many teams as most other states. I don’t have the stats on this so I was curious if you did.
I got mine off of the FIRST website. I know that Florida has 76 so…lol Cali is quite a bit more expansive in teams than us. Florida probably wont get a district model till FIRST regulates every state into its own district lol
What’s worse, if you look at distributions of teams in Florida they are really segmented. Or at least that’s how it appeared to me. (It’s also been about a year since I checked into it)
In Michigan we have a heavy concentration in SE Michigan and a heavy smattering on the west coast of the state. But overall they are heavily concentrated in those two areas with SE being far more heavily populated (I grew up with no less than 3 FRC teams within 20 minutes of my house, 27, 33, and 68. And I lived on the outskirts of the suburbs, north 5 miles was farmland and almost 0 cell signal). This lent itself to districts quite easily as it meant most teams don’t have travel costs other than gas for the family van.
Cali is in a different boat as far as distribution. It’s worth looking into if you are hoping for districts in your area. Distributions and densities do matter otherwise you won’t be saving a whole lot on travel costs (and in some cases, you spend more). Districts are NOT a magic bullet to solve all the FIRST problems. They work in certain areas due to peculiarities in their geography, population density, team density, and sponsor density.
Is California going to districts next year? Any other regions?
I’ve been told from multiple sources the Northwest is going to districts next year. I’m very excited about it, our region has grown a lot in the past few years and I’m hoping it’ll help push us further and be more competitive. If anyone has more information about it they’d like to share, I’d be interested to know.
