DLink 1522

Our DLink 1522 freezes when we try to change network settings in bridge mode. We have tried different computers, reset the DLink, etc. We can set up the AP mode but will it work the same without the bridge mode? Anyone have any opinions, had the same problem, or know how to properly change the settings in bridge mode?

Also should we change the NetBios name or leave it in its default?

Leave the NetBios name alone.

I assume you followed the FRC directions, at what step and where did it freeze?

Did you try different web browsers in addition to your different computers?

If you are referring to the fact that the final save of settings right before progressing to the AP setup never finishes, that is to be expected.

The IP address is set to a 10. sub net, the computer is still on a 192. subnet, so it never sees a response from the DLINK that the save is complete.

Just move on to the next step of configuring the AP portion.

I have completed the setup without any problems, but I do have a problem connecting to the D-Link wirelessly. The router must be in bridge mode to connect to a netbook right? when in bridge mode the netbook does not see the router. If I change the router to AP mode the netbook finds the router. I have tried to connect to the router while in AP mode, my netbook ip is 10.15.29.5 (that’s what it’s supposed to be right?). the netbook sees the security on it, I enter the WPA key, then it thinks for a while and eventually does not connect and will never find that wireless connection again until i reset the router to factory defaults and go through all the steps.

The D-Link must be in AP mode to connect to the Classmate.

10.15.29.5 is correct for your Classmate/Driver Station.

Try it with security turned off.

After a quick restart the netbook magically connected with the D-Link. Thanks for your quick response.

really? #2 under ‘Configuring the Radio for Competitions’, it says, “The radio must be in Bridge mode at competitions.”

At competitions the Driver Station is connected by Ethernet cable directly to the Field Router.
The Field Router connects wirelessly to the bridge on the robot.

A bridge and a laptop wireless card are sort of like clients that need a router somewhere to connect to.
When the D-Link switch is set to AP, it acts like a router and the Classmate can connect to it, but when the D-Link switch is set to Bridge, it acts only as a bridge, not a router, and only another router can connect to it.

There is an exception for some bridges that support ad hoc networks, but that doesn’t apply to our equipment.

Oh, that makes sense! Thanks!

we’re having problems at an earlier stage:

  1. Click on the Setup tab on the top menu bar
  2. Click on the Wireless tab on the left side of the page
  3. Change the Wireless settings as follows:

My WIRELESS tab is completely empty. I can see where all those boxes with settings should be, and they’re not there. we’re the only ones with this problem?

Try using IE as a browser. People have discovered that some web browsers, like Firefox, don’t play well with the D-Link.

You are not alone…

It worked!
Thanks!

once I have Dlink 1522 correctly configured, what’s the next step to have everything communicanting wirelessly?

I couldn’t find anywhere if previous years’ linksys router for the driver station will continue being used, nor its configuration steps.

I see a gap in the manuals concerning this part

Setup the classmate to use it’s wireless connection (set the IP) and disable the Ethernet Local LAN.

You should be able to get it to connect directly to the D-Link network (SSID= your team number).

The manuals indeed say nothing regarding last year’s router. That’s because last year’s router is not used this year.

The “next step” should already have been done. If you set up the Classmate properly, it will connect wirelessly to the DAP-1522 using your team number as the SSID.

so, I just need to configure the radio as says on the manual and have my passphrase “1156WPAKEY”?
I can imagine it working while on driver station mode, but how about during the developing code period where we don’t use the driver station software?

btw, I wish I could test this stuff by myself and save you the time of answering these elementary questions, but today we managed to burn our kOP’s router (220V outlets and my careless apprentice…) and we’re having a hard time finding an identical one here in Brazil. If we are to get a new radio only when we are at our regional in NY, I’d like to know as much as I can beforehand to avoid surprises.

Thanks.

When you’re done configuring it, you will be running in Access Point mode. The passphrase in the instructions is for Bridge Mode, which you won’t be using until you configure the DAP at a competition event. I think the passphrase shown is just an example, and the actual passphrase will be set for you by the configuration kiosk software.

Will you be using the Classmate to do your software development? If so, no problem. Otherwise, either connect your development computer to the “1156” wireless network or plug it into the router directly.

It is possible, indeed likely, that you only fried the power adapter, and the DAP is still perfectly okay. If that is the case, you should be able to power it from the robot as intended.

we were planning to use last years bridge instead of the d-link. is that allowed?

No, see <R52>.

Alright, so we can’t get past the step where you change your settings in bridge mode. I know your post is pretty straight-forward, but I just wanted to double check that we in fact do not need bridge mode? Because when we try to change the settings in IE, it saves the settings for Wireless, but not for Network.
Tl;dr: We can just get away without setting up bridge mode?

You won’t be using your DAP as a bridge until you go to a competition event. If things go as I expect them to, there will be an automated “FRC Radio Kiosk” that will set up everything for you.

Because when we try to change the settings in IE, it saves the settings for Wireless, but not for Network.

How do you know it isn’t saving the settings? If it’s just a matter of failing to show you a confirmation screen, that’s easy to explain – you’ve just changed the DAP’s address, but your computer is still trying to connect to the original address.

You don’t need to set up bridge mode for development at home. You won’t be using it that way (unless you do some fancy undocumented networking setup using other equipment that might work okay but is neither supported nor sanctioned this year).
