So, I know that if a waitlisted team wins qualifying spot at a regional, they do not generate a wild card per rule T23. From an earlier discussion in another thread, we kind of concluded that a team like team 45 who qualified to worlds under T18 would eat a spot from DCMP allocation if they win but would not eat a spot if they were a “next in” team.
With that said, would a waitlisted team eat a spot if they won a DCMP like they would if they won a regional? And, would a waitlisted team eat a spot if they were a “next in” team? Thanks.
Hmm… that surprises me. I figured it’d be “Yes, and…no”
Also, what about if a waitlisted team wins a major award (RAS, EI, Chairmans). Would that eat a spot (Yes, I’m looking at you 3494 and you possibly winning EI…haha)?
Last year, this conversation came up in another thread. I think we determined that it does eat a spot if 45 wins the competition because an original team won a DCMP (I think MAR or Ches) in 2015 and, it ate a spot from their district.
I’m unaware if this has changed due to the advent of 2Champz, but I’m 99% certain that if a waitlist-qualified team earns a spot through normal means (winner, wildcard, chairman’s, district points, etc), they qualify under that spot instead, and their waitlist spot gets sent back into the pool.
Pre-qualified teams, as far as I can tell, will always generate a wildcard if they qualify at a regional. In addition, pre-qualified teams do not count against a district’s number of champs spots.
If you’re curious, waitlisted teams do not ‘eat’ a slot because the waitlist is taken into account when determining a district’s allocation. I know it has been this way since at least 2015.

This is false. I know 341 (HOF) won their DCMP last year and it didn’t decrease MAR’s allocation. This, again, is due to how district allocations are calculated (pre-qualified teams do not count towards a district’s total size).
Well, I was up in the stands tracking district points on an excel sheet to see if we were going to get in. I saw that we barely made it in and saw that you were next. I thought that when 3494 won EI, 3494 would forfeit their waitlist spot and take the EI spot. I was pleasantly surprised to see that was not the case and that you got in
We had actually confirmed this with someone from FIRST before awards. If a waitlist team had won, a points spot would have been opened up as well. We qualified for champs through the waitlist and EI, but because we already had the waitlist spot, IN did not have to use one of its 10 district allocation spots on the EI winner (us). If we had not won EI though, IN would have had the 4 points spots as originally planned.
I was doing the same thing (tracking dp) and happened to be sitting in front of 4272. After 3494 won ei we knew we would go since we were 5th in dp (team 135) and then a 4272 mentor said to me: “now you guys have to win chairmans” then we did so they got to go! We are very excited to compete with so many awesome Indiana teams. Hopefully we can get someone on Einstein’s again this year!
Yup. I definitely understand. I deleted the winners and award winners as they were announced to make sure my numbers were right too. It’s funny how all the “next in” teams (except 1720 I believe) were sitting all fairly close to each other at DCMP.
Actually, just so you know, at that particular moment prior to winning Chairman’s, 4272 exceeded 135 by 12 dp after winning safety award. Your winning Chairman’s was the condition that allowed you to go, as far as district ranking is concerned.
That was the only spot we could keep our team together. Stands were full and we also had someone with a medical issue and needed closer to the elevator. Good scouting spot also. We would have loved to be packed right in there with the others if we could have.
