Dr Joe's Gif of the Week Contest 2018: Week 5 Submissions

The purpose of this thread is to collect and discuss official submissions for Week 5 of Dr Joe’s Gif of the Week Contest 2018

Note. After consideration, I have decided to allow comments as well as submissions in this message thread. Keep things pretty much on topic (let’s avoid strategy and rules discussions for example) but feel free to discuss GIFs in this thread.

Reminder of the rules/details:

  1. Clip has to be an actual GIF
that you include in a response to THIS submission thread via that “Insert Image” icon.
Find a public place online to host the gif file and then link to it when you use the “Insert Image” icon. You should find a sort of safe place to upload them because if nobody can see your gif because their school or work blocks the host site, you are not going to win. FWIW, I really want the GIF to play as soon as you load your message. Don’t make folks follow links if you want to win the $10.

  2. Clip must include a shot of a robot
competing in an OFFICIAL match played the week named in the thread.
You can have crowd shots, reactions, split screens, grinders, SpaceX Boosters, etc. but you MUST have at least a full second of an FRC robot in the Gif some how some way.

  3. You have to IDENTIFY the robot(s) and the match played in the submission thread.

Not kidding. IN YOUR SUBMISSION, ID THE ROBOT(S) AND THE MATCH PLAYED
I prefer the TBA match naming convention if you want to impress the judge.

  1. First come, first served. If clips of the same event are submitted, the earlier submitted gif is the winner.

This can get a little tricky. Look to copyright law for guidance. If your gif is “transformative” (say you use the same clip but the REASON it is a better gif is that you added something creative or juxtaposed other items or in some way added a transformative element then MAYBE the judge will allow a reuse of that clip). Just like in the US legal system, it is going to be a roll of the dice. If you want to risk it, go for it. Eyes wide open. Read next rule.

  1. Two things that will make it easier for me to make the voting thread.
  • Include a proposed title

for the gif for me to use in the voting thread

  • Only one gif per post
(if you want to submit multiple gifs, make multiple message replies)
  1. I am the official arbitrator of disputes and rules interpretations.

Start your own dang contest if you are really that unhappy.
Really. Life is too short for this kind of nonsense.

Let’s have some fun.

Also, go vote for your favorite Week 4 Gif here

Cheers,
Dr. Joe J.

“Three High, Double Placement”

Quarters 3 Match 1 FIM East Kentwood 2771 (Code Red) and 6090 (Wayland Wildcats) place two cubes on each other at the same time, and they remain stacked for the rest of the match.

4159 found a pet robot

Team 4159 ran over 2144’s “leash” in QF3-2 at Silicon Valley.

“Whose side is it?”

Qual 57 FIM Shepherd: 3570 (on red) scores on the blue side of the scale. Eventually almost scores a second cube before realizing the mistake.

“Bank Shot”

Shameless self-promotion. 3082 (Chicken Bot Pie) in red lands an auto cube in the switch after it bounces off of their alliance partner 3871 (Trojan Robotics) in 2018mnmi2_qm54.

We had a 100% success rate of 1 cube in the switch at Lake Superior, but broke our Pigeon IMU during practice matches at North Star. Since we didn’t have a replacement, I had to write a new auto routine that was mostly guesswork based on encoder values and time… it only worked once on the competition field (but many times on the practice field), and this was that once.

Blackout Dance Party!

q33txel2018 Teams: 2583, 5242, 6133, 624, 6131, 6377

“SuperNOVA Suffers a Scare”

“Thanks for the Free Win”

Qual match 35 at MFR featuring 4607 scoring 125 Foul Points in 10 seconds off 2500 who ended up in a(n) (un)fortunate position after auto.

The low point of our season:

“The ol backwards/forwards switcheroo!”

Team 2383 in Qual 17 at South Florida Regional. Driver and operator switched up their directions ::ouch::

We had 8 matches to repair our bent intake, but we managed to field a functioning robot in Qual 25 for our first win of the day.

After a slightly less bumpy ride through Quals, We sorted out our directions and went on to be regional finalists with 1744 and 3164!

When you really need to talk to your Human Player.

(Watch between scoring table and refs)

During 2018flwp_qm45 6001’s coach apparently really needed to talk to his human player.

Title: “Synchronized Auto Shots”
Match: Quarters 4 Match 2 at the NC District Forsyth County Event
Teams Involved: 6502 DARC SIDE and 3737 Roto-Raptors
TBA: http://www.thebluealliance.com/match/2018ncwin_qf4m2

Simply put, these are the most synchronized auto shots you could ask for! From the timing of the turn of the robots, the time when they fire, the height that the cubes reach, and the way the scale stays perfectly still. Also, note the reaction of the ref in the lower left, priceless.

4643’s Legendary 4 Line Autonomous Mode

In the first 15 seconds of 2018idbo_qm42, 4643 managed to cross EACH alliance’s autonomous line TWICE before slamming into their own driver’s station. We must have spent 20 minutes at our scouting meeting watching this masterpiece. They would go on to fix their auto mode, landing the auto quest at every match they played after this one.

that looks freakin awesome!

Voting for Week 5 is going to be tough, tough, tough…

One simple request, can penalty-call-inducing moves get their own category? I count at least 4.

“Maybe We Are A Little Bit Top Heavy”

Finals 2 2018 PNW District Auburn Mountainview Event
This is the only time I remember seeing 1778 fall over this season (maybe I’m mistaken) and it couldn’t have come at a worse time for them. They played great though, and we’re looking forward to seeing them at the PNW District championship.

https://i.makeagif.com/media/4-02-2018/h2WRH3.gif](/gif/just-a-bit-top-heavy-h2WRH3)

Our preferred title is “If a Double Reverse 4 Bar Falls in the Finals, Does it Make a Sound?”

Yep, that is the only time we’ve tipped this season and plan to keep it that way! It ended up as a best case fall, the robot went over relatively gently, and the lift was extended such the shock of the fall was nicely distributed.

Trust Fall

291 catches 4780 as it topples over in Qualification 81 at the Buckeye Regional. 2018ohcl_qm81

Don’t worry, this won’t happen again…

I’m pretty sure this is the best set of contest submissions yet!

+1 Your submission is like a cheat code though! I thought my Gif was decent until I saw the blackout! So cool.
