I am curious to learn how teams basic running platform is doing in regards weight :eek:
Our modified kitbot chassis and Omni-wheel wheel design came in at 50 lbs yesterday :ahh: That is about 10 lbs more than I had expected but maybe it is okay. We are using the basic kit frame, four CIM motors, four kop transmissions, four AM plastic omniwheels.
So, post your sub-system weight and description if you like for comparison.
Right now we have 4 small CIMs, two small clyinders, two custom shifting gearboxes, 6 wheels, 8 pillow blocks, and a base frame at 23 lbs (or so Inventor says). That does not include wheel axles, bearings, sprockets, or chains. So I’m guessing maybe 35lbs.
Ours is about 40 lbs. with motors, but no electronics.
How does your robot drive with the 4 omni wheels? We have been experimenting with 2, we have never tried 4 for fear of being pushed sideways.
I am intrested to see how it works.
We lack getting chain around the last wheel set so it doesn’t drive as of yet
We have them mounted in the corners at an angle such that the wheels are aligned along the diagonal.
We have conceeded losing in a pushing match but hope that the system is more manuverable and can drive our way around such situations. We felt that being able to turn on a dime and swerve while chasing balls was more important that holding postion in this years game. :o It is a worry though when one is lined up for a shot and gets a push. If weight was not a concern then we could deploy some pnuematic actuated locking feet…

Four KOPS gearboxes? I’d think an easy way to drop weight would be to use two and use chain to drive the wheels… But then again I don’t know how much a KOP gearbox weighs.
Cyber Blue is right around 50 pounds for our drive with 4 CIMs, 2 gearboxes, modified kit frame, treads, and everything needed to make the treads roll. It’s heavy but it’s pretty much what we expected.
We have two frames, one atop the other. The bottem subassembly weighs 11 pounds sans motors and pre-drilling. The top assembly weighs about 20 pounds right now. That’s with electronics, motors, and other active element weight subtracted.
our running robot base comes in at 60 lbs. that includes everything even the air tanks to shift on the fly. This robot can take a hit. CG of this robot is around 3/4" off the ground. we use 35 chain which weighs more but worth it in many ways.
Ours weighs some where around 50 lbs. including Kit bot frame, KOP Transmissions, 4 total small CIMs, chain, 2 820 IFI wheels, 2 8" Skyway wheels RC and about 95% of our total electrical system. Of course since we are building in our school we figured the weight by me holding the frame while standing on a bathroom scale :rolleyes:
Right now, our two-level 80/20 frame is weighing in at about 14 pounds. All said and done, the final chassis and drive train should total around 35-40 pounds.
for all those concerned with weight, our wheels weigh 12lbs EACH (yea they’re heavy on purpose, you guys are smart, figure out why). we have 2. the complete drivetrain weighs ~45lbs minus electronics.
im not concerned with weight.

We haven’t finished assembling ours yet, but the basic 4 CIMs and two KOP gearboxes weighs a ton to start with. We tried to gouge out the gears but they just broke our bits :(. We’re using a custom frame, half aluminum, and half lexan so its pretty light weight. Our shifting mechanism is just a motor with a bit of metal so thats also not bad.(Yeah a non pneumatic shifter, using KOP gearboxes…) I’m guessing (based off some inventor estimates) about 35-40 pounds.
Our drivetrain, without its electronics, is about 38 lbs. at the moment. We replaced some lightweight spacers with bolts and made the weight just a bit more than I’d anticipated, but I am so far pleased with it.
How are some of you getting these drive trains so light? We’re going with 6 wheel drive, using 4 small CIM-Dewalts. The 4 motors with the Dewalt attachment is weighing in around 17.6 pounds for us. If there are any other teams using 4 small CIMs with Dewalts and 6 wheel drive, could you enlighten me as to how you do it? Private message me or reply, but with the weight problems we’re already having it’d be nice to see how other teams shave off those pounds, diet and exercise just don’t seem to be working.
Our 4 wheel drive platform with KOP gearboxes, #35 chain drive, 9" Skyway pneumatic wheels, 4 CIMs and a battery holder is 49.5 lbs. We do have to add a couple of skids, but hope to lighten up the sprockets and trim off the shafts. to make up for it.
