Hi everyone, this will be the first time team 2053 is going to compete in Long Island. Our transportation garage told me that buses are not allowed on parkways and she says she is not sure she can find a route to the venue or our hotel (Hyatt Place in Garden City). Can anyone help me out? I know there must be a way to get buses to the venue! Thank you very much for any help.
I find it very hard to believe your Transport dept. doesn’t have a GPS which follows commercial vehicle routes. While truck GPS devices are expensive and not something your team needs to invest in there are also apps available for both Android and IOS.
After a quick google map it looks like your hotel is close enough to Hofstra that buses can run locally and not have to jump on the Meadowbrook. It may take you a few minutes longer but you should be able to find an alternate route and locally should be fine because buses don’t follow the same weight restrictions as trucks.
If you aren’t able to figure something out with them, call your hotel or Hofstra’s shipping dept. and ask if they’re familiar with the routes their vendors are using.
I live with a truck driver who delivers in LI so I can guarantee there are ways around.
Thank you! The woman in the transportation department did call the hotel and was given directions. I think I panicked - it’s common sense that there are a lot of schools on the Island and they certainly get around! Again, thank you for the advice.
No worries.
While it’s true that there are no commercial vehicles or buses allowed on the Parkways (due to low bridge clearances) there are still plenty of ways to get from point A to point B. Getting from the Long Island Expressway to your hotel will mean your driver needs to take a choice of various available roads.
Getting from your hotel to Hofstra is all of just under 3 miles and not difficult at all.
Looking forward to seeing you folks at the competition.
