Duel on the Delaware
Saturday, October 22, 2016
Salem Community College- Davidow Hall, Carneys Point, NJ
Co-hosted by MOE 365 and LuNaTeCs 316

FOCUS OF THIS COMMUNICATION – REMINDER – Registration Updates - Duel Awards and Deadlines

• Success Won’t Wait Book Drive – focus areas and details
• October 1 – Duel Master Volunteer Submission (please recognize a volunteer/mentor on your team!)
• September 30 – Mock Chairman’s Award interest – let me know

(1) CHARITY BOOK DRIVE – Success Won’t Wait

  • Continue to collect your used books for our charity book drive competition.
  • Teams bringing the most books by weight will receive a trophy and special awards.
  • While many types of books are accepted, the organization is asking for CHILDREN’S BOOKS in particular-
  • Please donate books that are organized in boxes that are easily/safely moved by one person. Please don’t leave books in bags or very large containers. Also, please do not put books in bins/boxes that you want back.
  • Books are donated to Success Won’t Wait, a literacy non-profit. The mission is to encourage reading, especially for those in need and children.
  • ** PLEASE CONSIDER HAVING YOUR TEAM COLLECT BOOKS FOR THIS WORTHWHILE CAUSE **
  • For more information about Success Won’t Wait, check out http://www.successwontwait.org

(2) MIKE WADE MEMORIAL “DUEL MASTER VOLUNTEER” AWARD (submission form attached)

  • Mike Wade worked for NASA Goddard and single-handedly is responsible for the creation of a number of off-season events on the East Coast. Please honor his memory by submitted the great things that a mentor or volunteer is doing for your team.
  • Teams can submit one nominee who has not yet won the award from their team.
  • Nomination form is attached. Please complete and return by October 1st
  • Please recognize a worthy volunteer on your team. All submissions will be posted at the event and on the Duel on the Delaware website.
  • Send submissions to "][email protected]

(3) CHAIRMANS AWARD WARM-UP PRACTICE 4th year

  • This is not an award per se, but is an opportunity for teams to practice their Chairman’s Award presentation in front of judges
  • Teams interested in participating must do the following:
o Respond by September 30th or earlier to let me know that your team is interested in participating. We will have 6 (six) judging slots. These will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
o Send in a FIRST Chairman’s Award Executive Summary (same as FIRST typically requires for the Chairman’s Award). We expect that teams will just send in the same Executive Summary that they may have used for their Chairman’s Award earlier this year.
o Due date for Chairman’s Award Executive Summary is September 30 (sign-ups), and October 10 (submission)
o Prepare to present your Chairman’s Award to judges at the Duel. Currently, the presentation would be the same as a typical Chairman’s presentation at an official FIRST event. Depending upon the number of teams who are participating, we reserve the right to modify the presentation time. We expect that it will not change.
o Let us know what you need for your presentation (AV, easels, etc.)
  • Our purpose for doing this is to provide teams another opportunity to practice with real judges (we expect to have at least one of the judges be an experienced Chairman’s Award judge) and to provide some helpful feedback for teams as they prepare for the 2016 competition season.

STRONGHOLD DEFENSES WE WILL USE AT THE DUEL

The MAR equipment committee is recommending that the fall off-season events not make use of the Portcullis and Drawbridge defenses. Additionally, they have asked events to select a set of defenses that will be left in place on the field throughout the event. With this in mind, the Duel Planning team needs your input. Based on this request, we have recently conducted a survey and are basing the survey results on the defenses which we will use for the Duel, which will be stationary for the event. We currently do not have the specific locations for each defense determined and may not until the event day.

The four defenses (in addition to the Low Bar, which will be in the same position it has for official Stronghold competitions) selected are…

  • Rock Wall
  • Rough Terrain
  • Moat
