What was the logic behind using an elevator vs some form of sprocket system to rotate your arm?

We wanted to avoid a rotational gearbox is really the big reason. We as a team have done elevators in the past and thought it would be easier on the code and reliability. We were aware of the amount of play and slack we would have to tune out in order to get such a heavy arm to rotate up.
