Obviously, FIRST is all about recognition and inspiration. This absolutely holds true for the FIRST Championship event. To further encourage each of us to create the world we would love to live in, MOE 365 is initiating a special, limited edition, PERSONAL RECOGNITION button. This button will not be distributed freely (like our dozen or so other buttons), but must be EARNED by an individual.
The way it works…
Each MOE team member attending the Championship (about 60 students and mentors) will have only 3 (three) PERSONAL RECOGNITION buttons. Each button holder will be instructed to award a button for what they believe to be the best examples deserving recognition in the following areas:
Gracious Professionalism
Helpfulness
Spirit / Enthusiasm
Xtreme Safety
Bringing people together
These areas and how our team members assess people against them is going to be somewhat subjective. However, the overriding factor is actions “Deserving Special Recognition.”
Not only will recognized individuals receive one of our limited edition buttons (~180 in all), but the MOE team member awarding the button will record the name, team number, and reason for the recognition at the time of the award. We plan on posting all recognition awardees (or at least as many as we obtain information for) on our website shortly after the Championship.
So put your Gracious Professional game-face on and do what you always do at FIRST competitions, create an environment we all wish we lived in everyday!
…and look out for those glowing green jerseys. They might end up pinning a button on you!
You should give one to our drive team for losing to you guys at Philly;) Gracious Professionalism was really tested after the DQ call. Oh well grin and bear it, were going to Nat’s
If we had Personal Recognition buttons at Philly, we might have done just what you suggest.
I recommend that we look forward to all the fun and excitement awaiting us at the Championship Event and not backward. Let’s all make this event one we can recollect with only positive memories.
Oh, Oh Me. I got spirit yes I do. Either that or I am nuts. That is a great idea you have come up with. A team with so much spirit giving out Spirit buttons and GP and… Way to lead the way. See you at Championships.

You mean there are other colors besides GREEN? Why in the world would you need more colors?
Lotus blossoms ARE woody flowers. Woodie Flowers IS NOT Woody Flowers.
Why just settle for “Nationals” when you can attend "THE CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT"
There is also RED which you will see if you attend Mr. Moe’s and my presentation on Multiple High School Teams at the conference! It may be harsh on the eyes, but we WILL keep your attention that way!
O so there is green and red. But ORANGE trumps all! It is too bad that 648 will not be attending the championship event. But guess what. We’ll see ya next year! Haha.
oh wow! what a neat idea. i’ll be sure to act EXTRA spirited around MOE people (not that i wont already be doing that anyways…) i want a special limited-edition awesome MOE Button! heehee
and hey, speaking of colors, green is nice, so is red, but PINK is CONTAGIOUS. (dont forget that Real Men Wear Pink!!) :]
Well I’ve seen TJ^2 in action and personally handed you guys a MOE Team Spirit Award (The First Automated Clapping MOE Sticks awarded) at NJ in 2004.
Pin Man, if you, your mentor Moe (who has a great name ) and the rest of TJ^2 bring your “A Spirit Game” and help make Galileo the most spirited division at Championships; you should have no problem earning one .
And that’s coming from my teammate? Oh wait, she’s part of that… what do you call it? oh yeah, the PIT CREW, the ones you only see a few times during a competition because they’re goofing off under the pretense of actually WORKING ON THE ROBOT!!!
Actually, Tiffany, this idea was one of those born out of a brainstorming session.
Like many others, we give out Team Awards such as our clapping MOEstix Team Spirit trophy, but every year at Championships we see many examples of positive FIRST behavior that really do not fall into a “team” catgegory. The behavior is usually more individual in nature; acts of courtesy or assistance toward one another, the enthusiastic spirit leader(s) of a team, the impromptu activities that bring folks from different teams together, etc. These all contribute to the great event and the party atmosphere that we enjoy each year, and make it three wonderfully hectic days.
Because the actions are individual, we thought the recognition should reflect that as well. We decided to charge ourselves with the task of personally recognizing individual actions that we feel contribute positively to the FIRST community. The buttons are a visual symbol that someone from our team observed behavior that would “Make Your Grandmother Proud.”
Will we be able to officially recognize all the positive FIRST behaviors in Atlanta? No, that is an impossible task for any team, even one as large as the Miracle Workerz. We hope and encourage other teams to join in the task of recognizing positive individual actions at the Championship, and if they have time, create a button, ribbon or other visual symbol to commemorate the recognition.
Who knows, if all teams worked together on this task, maybe we could officially recognize all the behaviors that make this FIRST community so great.
