I was wondering what tools/supplies that I will need to get the control system properly.
Off the top of my head, will supplement this evening:
Necessary:
- The Game Manual, with special emphasis on sections 8.6 through 8.9. This isn’t first in the list by accident. Read it, and keep a copy handy as you wire to check gauges and what can and cannot be connected different ways. Read it again between build sessions.
- The user guides for all of the control system parts. Download 'em now.
- The control stuff that came in your kit of parts, including the stuff in the rookie tote.
- Pliers: at a minimum, diagonal cutting pliers and needle nose pliers, strippers being next, but the more different pliers the better
- Allen wrench set & screwdriver set
- More wire (stranded, rubbery-jacketed is best)
- something to use as a base for your control system. Plywood is common for rookies, but plastic peg board is much better.
Recommended
- Probably more motors and motor controllers, depending on your robot design.
- Zip ties
- Pads to tie zip ties down with.
- Anderson Power pole connectors and crimper, or lever nuts, or automotive style connectors and a crimper.
Edit: Alan got the stuff I was about to add below. The 1/8" screwdriver for the wago should be sturdy (not a jeweler’s style driver).
Edit2: And if you haven’t seen the screensteps live wiring site, put it around #2 or #3 on the necessary list.
7/16” nut driver (120A breaker wire)
5/16” combination wrench (for battery terminals)
Wire stripper
2.24mm or 3/32” screwdriver (roboRIO power)
⅛” screwdriver (PDP WAGO terminals)
5mm allen key (PDP power connector screws)
5/64” allen key (PDP power cover screws)
Needle nose pliers
Phillips #2 screwdriver (Motor controller screws)
Wire crimper
There’s more to add here as you get more advanced but this is all you need (as far as I remember) to get a running start
