Engineering Inspiration Award Questions?

What kinds of questions has your team been asked pertaining to Engineering Inspiration Award?

Thanks!

The guidelines state:

  • Extent and inventiveness of the team’s efforts to recruit students to engineering with particular emphasis on the most recent year’s efforts. Measurable success of those efforts.
  • Extent and effectiveness of the team’s community outreach efforts with particular emphasis on the most recent year’s efforts. Measurable success of those efforts.
  • A commitment to science and technology education among the team, school, and community.
  • Achievement of the FIRST mission and ability to communicate that at the competition and away from it.
  • Efforts are ongoing, not strictly concentrated on the build and competition season.

So any question about your outreach, team culture, and recruitment are going to be applied towards this award by the judges.

At the Regionals I’ve been to, we generally get visited by 4 sets of judges on Friday - two asking questions about the robot, two asking questions about the team. There’s a 5th set of judges that’ll ask about your business plan as well, but that’s handled a little differently from the rest of the awards, as it’s just that group of judges looking at it.

If you look at the awards, there’s a group of them that are robot-centric, and a group that are team-centric, including EI. The robot judges will put up the list of potential teams for each of the robot awards, and the team judges will put up the list for the team awards, and then the whole group narrows it down from there.

Each group of judges typically have a set of “standard questions” they’ll try to ask every team they talk to. It’s up to you to use those questions to guide the conversation towards what you want to talk about, which can be driven by the award criteria for the award(s) you want to try to win!
