how many people have become inspired to become engineers?
I want to be an engineer, but I wanted to be that even before I joined robotics.
I have a feeling that i’m going to be in the minority on this poll, but here goes anyway. I love FIRST. It has inspired me to do many things that i never would have tried otherwise. However, becoming an engineer is not one of them.
Before getting into FIRST, I was all for being a firefighter cause it’s a family thing. After 3 yrs of being with first, I’m proud to say that I am going to be attending college next year majoring in mechanical engineering. FIRST, to me, is life.
i guess ill throw in my story now…before i was involved with FIRST a little over two years ago (this being the third) i didnt know what i wanted to do…but now i have changed my mind and am torn between engineering and becoming a laywer…yea i know two jobs on opposite sides of the spectrum…FIRST has changed things…i dunno though
Although I have my heart set on being a lawyer when I’m older, I think I’ve been “inspired” in other ways by first. To doctor up on my lawyer skills, I was incharge of making sure our team followed all the rules and incase a judge were to DQ our extendor, I was ready to fight it with my annotated manual. I also learned so much about business and management, its unbelievable.
Before joining FIRST last year, I had no idea what I wanted to do. Now I know that I want to go into electrical engineering. I was inspired by joining FIRST, and by the awesome mentors on our team (especially the electrical guy, Rich. Thank you!!) That’s my story!

Yep, I want to be an engineer - the hard part for me is what kind! Mechanical, electrical, aerospace…they’re all cool to me!

Same applies here. I want to be an automotive electercial engineer. (try saying that 3 times fast…)
I think being an avation electronics engineer would be very cool, but I bet there aren’t many openings for that specific of a field.
I’m going to University of Maryland next year for the only accredited undergraduate Fire Protection Engineering major in the country. It’s a hot field (haha) with a lot of demand for graduates. Each year at University of Maryland, they get about 400 job offers for FPE graduates, which is about equal to 16 years of graduating Fire Protection majors.
FIRST has taught me I want to become an engineer just like my English class has taught me that I want nothing to do with an English major. What a great combination!
When I grow up, I wanna build robots. I’m going to SUNY Stony Brook to be a computer engineer and I’ll do that until I’m rich. Then I’m just gonna build myself a bunch of robots to play with.
Will I be an engineer? well, kind of. I plan on going through ROTC and becoming an officer in the USAF. But I am going to major in aerospace engineering. So even though I won’t really work as an engineer I’ll have the education.
Engineering runs in my family. I love to do math, i like to do science, and i love social studies. Its an odd combo, but i plan to become an officer in the USAF then go into aerospace, i love to designs things that you actualy see how changing a value or altering an angle will effect something. Because of FIRST i can start applying what i know to robotics, it has now become something that i will pour all my time into. Heck, im gonna try to take some CAD classes during the summer!
Heh before HS I wanted to be a lawyer, but why the heck would I want to spend an aditional 8 years in school and become a no fun and a stiff?
By the end of my MSOE summer camp in 2001, I knew I wanted to go into Electrical Engineering (I almost leaned towards Mechanical as a sophomore). Oh and Im going to MSOE also

You mean you aren’t already no fun and a stiff?

no need to fight, just go play some computer game that lets you kick each others arse without anyone getting hurt. Either that or wait untill the comps and you might meet each other!
