I’m guessing the answer is no, but on the off chance I’m wrong… the $24 REV-31-1505 is permitted, but it’s just a $7 I2C VL53L0X with a plastic REV cover. Any chance the VL53L0X is also permitted?
There are no FRC rules prohibiting the use of that sensor or requiring the use of the REV equivalent so yes it is legal. Could you clarify why in the Section 9 robot rules that you would be drawing the conclusion otherwise so I can work to clear that language up?
Are you referring to FTC or FRC? I am referring to FRC.
Edited: Completely ignore me if this is for FTC.
This post was tagged ftc, so I’m going off of the FTC manual here.
This year’s manual, §7.3.3, RE13 says (emphasis mine):
Light Sources - Functional and/or decorative light sources (including LEDs) are allowed with the following constraints:
a. Focused or directed light sources (for example: lasers and mirrors) are not allowed except for the REV Robotics 2m Distance sensor (REV-31-1505).
Since the exception is only made for a specific part from a specific manufacturer, it seems to me that it would be illegal to use another part (since it was not explicitly permitted). As always, use the official FIRST Q&A system to get an enforceable ruling.
