Event Preferencing - How'd we do in Round 1?

Howdy. Hope to see you all there this weekend.

Still hopeful on Arkansas but waiting sets off this chain reaction to have to explain the whole process to any new mentor, parent, students etc., that hasn’t the joy of being on the wait list yet. I should just send them the CD thread link: FRC Waitlists for Dummies

NY currently has 135 teams registered. (121 in events last I saw, with the rest on waitlist.)
Last time NY was at 133 teams was 2012.
Last year saw 146 teams compete, which was similar to 2014/2015 (147).
Before 2017 we only had 4 regionals. 2017 saw HVR start, with 18 having CNY and LI1.

Currently compared to last year we have 15 teams still not signed up in any capacity, with 11 of them being downstate. (9 NYC, 2 LI)

With those concerns, spots will need to be held at LI and NYC to accommodate late signups.
Also NYC and HVR are only at 28 and 13, with LI at 39 teams already. (Last year LI had 49 teams, but that was cramped.) Hopefully with LI and TVR on separate weekends, and not landing on holidays, teams should be able to get their 2 events.

But this means LI will be hard to get in, which was why it was recommended that local teams only put LI events first. Last year we had 45 teams between Nassau and Suffolk county. A few local teams didn’t attend LI last year ( not sure if they didn’t get in or chose not to.) But currently, of the 14 teams on the waitlist, 1 is a LI team and the other 13 are NYC teams. (Best guess is teams trying to get into HVR and NYC based on limited capacity currently.)

With NYC and LI we also constantly see very late signups.

So for people wondering, unfortunately you may wind up sitting on the waitlist for a bit, at least for downstate events as evident by past year’s trends.

Figure I would update this as round two opens up in a few days.

To be clear once again all of the following is me just guessing based on data. I have no insider knowledge. I am but a humble person who was intrigued and spent way to much time on this

After some pretty heavy waitlist clearing and late signups we are sitting at 1767 regional slots filled (up from 1543 on registration day) but 1843 Regional Teams are signed up (up from 1761 ) leaving us with 76 teams on waitlist (down from 218).

We are now up to 27* regionals on waitlist

Lets once again assume (wrongly) that all international teams on this list that have an event in their country, and typically compete in said country are waitlisted for an event in said country that means:

Ankara: 20 Teams (Unchanged)
Number Name Location
6430 Kalsedon Eskişehir, Eskisehir, Türkiye
7536 ANKA ROBOTICS Başakşehir, Istanbul, Türkiye
8042 Fenrir ANTALYA, Antalya, Türkiye
8220 Space Tigers MERSİN, Mersin, Türkiye

New Taipei City Regional: 2 Teams (Down From 25)
Number Name Location
6083 Overlooking Chiayi, Chiayi, Chinese Taipei
6191 RoboKryptonite Taipei, Taipei Special Municipality, Chinese Taipei

I actually think they are on the Southern Cross Waitlist but I have no inside knowledge

Regional Monterrey presented by PrepaTec: 5 Teams (Unchanged)
Number Name Location
3480 PrepaTec - ABTOMAT León, Guanajuato, Mexico
3794 Prepa Tecmilenio WinT METEPEC, Mexico, Mexico
4775 Aztech Robotics Mexico City, Mexico, Mexico
8740 Prepa Tecmilenio - Quantum Force Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico
8741 Prepa Tecmilenio - Raccoons San nicolas de los Garza, Nuevo León, Mexico
Shanghai Regional: 1 Team (Up From 0)
Number Name Location
10214 Doritos Beijing, Beijing, China
Southern Cross: 3 Teams (Down From 20)
Number Name Location
5876 ARTEMIS Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
10342 Lost in Translation Perth, Western Australia, Australia
10552 Mazenod Machinists Mulgrave, Victoria, Australia

This leaves us with potentially 46 teams at 21 events or 2-3 teams per waitlist.

However we can still eliminate another large chunk of teams those being the teams in New York :

FIRST Long Island, Hudson Valley, New York City: 15 Teams (Down From 72)
Number Name Location
271 Mechanical Marauders Bay Shore, New York, USA
694 StuyPulse New York, New York, USA
1796 RoboTigers Queens, New York, USA
1880 Warriors of East Harlem New York, New York, USA
2344 The Saunders Droid Factory Yonkers, New York, USA
2601 Steel Hawks Flushing, New York, USA
3017 Patriots Fresh Meadows, New York, USA
5123 Mechadogs Yonkers, New York, USA
6880 Universal Serial Brawlers (USB) Yorktown Heights, New York, USA
7730 uNReal Thiells, New York, USA
8739 Redhawk Robotics Ozone Park, New York, USA
9295 Harlem Rails New York, New York, USA
9509 Cybears Yonkers, New York, USA
10229 Event Horizon New York, New York, USA

I am going to add one more team here because they confirmed where they were:

Number Name Location
9692 Sigma Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

(Registered for Long Island)

I am also going to assume that the single California and Hawaiian teams are registered at one of the California Regionals

Aerospace Valley, Los Angeles, Orange County, Pinnacles, San Diego, San Francisco, Silicon Valley: 2 Teams (Down from 37)
Number Name Location
3008 Team Magma Honolulu, Hawaii, USA
10556 Coronado Robotics Coronado, California, USA

After Eliminating the above

This leaves us with 10 Regionals:

Arizona East Regional
Arkansas Regional
Central Missouri Regional
Heartland Regional
Lake Superior Regional
Las Vegas Regional
Minnesota 10,000 Lakes Regional
Orlando Regional
St. Louis Regional

With 27 teams
Number Name Location
167 Children of the Corn Iowa City, Iowa, USA
179 Children of the Swamp Riviera Beach, Florida, USA
379 The RoboCats Girard, Ohio, USA
1108 Panther Robotics Paola, Kansas, USA
1710 The Ravonics Revolution Olathe, Kansas, USA
1939 THE KUHNIGHTS Kansas City, Missouri, USA
1987 Broncobots Lees Summit, Missouri, USA
2408 Shrapnel Sergeants Hazelwood, Missouri, USA
3390 ANATOLIAN EAGLEBOTS Çankaya, Ankara, Türkiye
4027 Centre Punch State College, Pennsylvania, USA
4143 MARS/WARS Metamora, Illinois, USA
4817 One Degree North Singapore, North West, Singapore
5126 Electromagnetic Panthers (EMP) Riverside, Missouri, USA
5141 GRIFFINITE Kansas City, Missouri, USA
5801 CTC Inspire Independence, Missouri, USA
5809 The Jesubots 5809 Kansas City, Missouri, USA
5883 Spice Gears Kraśnik, Lubelskie, Poland
6160 Bombatrons Barnum, Minnesota, USA
6402 SKYTURKS ROBOTICS İSTANBUL, Istanbul, Türkiye
6424 Stealth Panther Robotics Knob Noster, Missouri, USA
7201 Crobotics Rijeka, Primorsko-goranska županija, Croatia
7523 SpringBots Centurion, Gauteng, South Africa
7719 Java Knights Depok, Jawa Barat, Indonesia
8613 Barker Greybacks Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
9316 CUBATRONICS Lenexa, Kansas, USA
9551 Tiger Hays, Kansas, USA
9715 Tsinelas’ Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines

Obviously they aren’t evenly distributed, certain teams we eliminated could not be at the events we put them in, and some of these teams may be at events we eliminated. The remaining teams leads me to believe that mile long waitlist for Central Missouri but I wouldn’t be surprised if Arkansas (I know of at least 2 teams on that waitlist), St. Louis and Heartland were all pretty long as well.

I’ve spoken with the coach, they will be attending Northern Lights, MNDU2.

Appreciate your efforts for this kind a research & analysis.
I hope your assumption for team 9692 becomes true, I have not seen any reflection on team’s dashboard yet.

Any idea for The FIRST Long Island Regional ?
How many teams submit it as a preference ?

How to know whats an order of waitlist & how many teams are ahead of which team in waitlist? Any idea?

My team is in wait list, hoping to get it clear before Event 2 selection opens up.

There is no public way to know how many teams submitted for a given regional, or at what preference. I would assume that the RDs can see that, or someone at HQ can, given time and a need to know that, but it’s not possible for the average person like you or me to see that.

As far as the waitlist and order–there are two statuses: On the waitlist, and off the waitlist. Waitlist doesn’t have an order, let alone a public order; it’s a list of teams that want to go if there’s space. The RDs can take any team from the waitlist to fill a spot. Waitlist is one of the most mysterious processes in FRC, second only to the judging of the Engineering Inspiration Award in some minds.

With that said: I left a couple of hints on how to find out a clearer picture and now I’ll make them clearer. “RD”. That would be the Regional Director for the region you want to go to. At the bottom of most pages on the FIRST site, there’s a “Find Local Support” button. Click that, then fill out the dropdowns for “United States” and “New York”. The first name on the list is the RD for Long Island, in this case.

Contact the RD and ask if you could have an idea of how likely you are to get into Long Island, given that you have travel arrangements to make/2nd events to sign up for. Most RDs will at least give you a “likely” “unlikely” or “really don’t know” sort of answer.

Waitlist is not really an ordered thing. I’d read the great thread previously posted in here, FRC Waitlists for Dummies .

It’s worthwhile to speak to them and explain any challenges your team would face by going to another regional - and if it is not possible for you, let them know that. From the thread it seems like NY is pretty impacted this year. Hopefully, they can pull you in (or offer a suitable alternate event) before then.

As I said above, LI is in an interesting predicament with teams. Especially with so many downstate NY teams signing up so late.

Your best bet would be to email Larry (the RD) about the waitlist. You can also try and see with a possibility of messaging NYC or Hudson valley as they have a lot more room at this point in time.

Thank you for your reply,

I have attempted to reach out to Larry Toonkel, the Regional Director for the Long Island event, multiple times but have not yet received a response. I used the email address provided in the “First Local Support” section: [email protected].

Could you please advise if there is an alternative contact or another method to obtain a response from the Regional Director? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your help.

You are correct for 3128 - SDR, got in off the waitlist last week.

My brain isn’t working as well as it used to. Someone help me out.

All three events we’d be fine with going to for 2nd round are full (capacity 0).

Next week when lists are processed is there going to be an initial bump in capacity? Or will we just be joining the waitlist to these events?

If it’s the former, we should put the three events in our order of preference.

If it’s the latter, no point in putting any more than one event, right?

Events with 0 current capacity most likely have waitlist spots. A good idea is to look at the number of teams the event had in the last few years to know what its max cap can be. For Cali events, @jaredhk might know what the max space for each event is?

Got into the event we are hosting (southern Maine district) and are hyped to be part of the first season where NE has at least 1 official event per state

I seem to remember hearing that most of the CA events had a reserve capacity of 20 teams, but I’m not 100% sure. Last year’s capacities should be a good indicator for the repeat venues.

All the events we’re looking at typically compete with 10-15 more teams more than are currently registered.

I guess my REAL question is about how 2nd event waitlists will be cleared. Will “local” and “rookies” get less consideration? Since the system has changed a bit, we all need to get used to how this will happen.

I haven’t heard about anything happening differently for round two than it has in the past. That doesn’t mean it won’t be different…but I haven’t heard.

If that’s the case, I assume that means a few spots will be held for a while for any late-registering rookies, and otherwise, things will just play out. I know that’s not super helpful.

Well congratulations your hope paid off.

We are both now registered for what might be the most stacked week 2 event this year.
