[EWCP] EWCPcast 2/5/12 - It's Week 5 Already?

Hey everyone, sorry for the late notice but I just wanted to remind you all that we’ll be doing another one of our weekly EWCPcasts tonight, 2/5/12 at 9pm EST on our Talkshoe Page: http://www.talkshoe.com/tc/98466

Hope you can tune in!

YAY! What’s tonight’s topic?

Just the usual stuff, where you should be going into week 5, Team Update Discussion, random Q&A stuff, etc. A lot of the usual folks are out tonight because of it being Superbowl Sunday so this one might be short and sweet.

I always enjoy listening in on the casts, thanks for putting them on.

Also, plus 1 for the name, ROBROCAST!

<SuperNerd256> They didn't change minibots last year, and that was clearly unfair at times.
<MarcS> Central valley, 3 ballancing on both sides in the finals, calling it right now.
<novatose> marc,is that successful balancing? Or attempted?
<SuperNerd256> I like it Marc! 256 is going wide this year. I think we can give you an offer you can't refuse... :D lol
<Guest 49> bottom row points was a very nice rule change
<SuperNerd256> And we're attending CVR
<Guest 49> much better balance
<Guest 49> You could make a 12 point set of tubes versus 6
<Guest 49> 3
<MarcS> That was haunting, einstien 2011, and no we are champions song afterwards.
<SuperNerd256> lol
<Bryan33> 10 balls ish
<novatose> about 7-8
<SuperNerd256> It depends how good their opponents score, how well human players can feed, and how good teams can collect balls from their opponent's alley.
<Bryan33> 5-6 would be pretty bad guys.
<stevend223> giants win 21-17 for those who are interested
<IndySam> we won't miss :)
<SuperNerd256> Neither will we Indy. ;)
<Guest 49> top tier hitting 12 shots seems reasonable
<schreiaj> Bryan, have you seen the averages from previous years?
<SuperNerd256> What does everyone think will be the score/miss ratio for balls shot?
<novatose> 1/4
<Guest 49> 90% probably around 4-6 shots made during teleop
<IndySam> I'll tell you after ref training
<MarcS> 1 out of every 4 shots goes in, average.
<SuperNerd256> lol
<Guest 40> if you shoot from the back of the key and someone is blocking you, you're not going to make it anyway
<SuperNerd256> Why one out of 4?
<Guest 40> you're trajectory would almost certainly be too low
<MarcS> hard target to hit, have you ever played basketball?
<SuperNerd256> Yes.
<Meredith16> I think 1 of 10 in qualifications.
<novatose> Also, are we all basing our score/miss on the top basket?
<SuperNerd256> That all depends from how far you shoot from.
<SuperNerd256> I'm basing ours on the middle basket.
<Guest 49> very few 0 vs 0 this year
<SuperNerd256> How much defense will you think will be preformed in front of the fender?
<Meredith16> There were 0, 1, 2..point matches in 2010 and you could PUSH the balls in...
Bryan33 has left the chat
Bryan33 is logged into the chat
<SuperNerd256> That's what we're doing.
<IndySam> we can dump on the middle but we won't miss from the key :)
<Bryan33> Sorry, the chat keeps cutting out on me.
<schreiaj> Meredith, we made it to the finals by pushing balls in (This is Dustin on Andrew's account)
<SuperNerd256> We're going to be like 254 from 2006. Run up to the scoring area, unload all of our balls, and get out of there ASAP.
<Bryan33> Anyways, what I was refering to was dumping in the 2 point goal.
<Meredith16> 2006 and 2010, you could do well pushing. None of that this year!
<novatose> also, you had robots pushing, now we are all shooting on the same, small gall
<Meredith16> ^exactly
<Bryan33> I think there will be lots of teams that do that?
<novatose> dumping? probably not
<IndySam> opposite side
<Bryan33> No, point blank 3 point shooting.
<SuperNerd256> It could be. Depending on which side we pick up from.

msimon785 has left the chat
<Guest 52> you really think that that many teams had no drive trains?
<Guest 49> compare week 1 to week 4, and it is a completely different group because everyone can play better
<Guest 52> remember the zone separation; defensive robots in breakaway were usually on defense for the whole match...
<SuperNerd256> People had drive trains. Good strategies and poor driving caused low scores.

<Guest 49> 8pts!
<SuperNerd256> Guest 49 makes a good point. 8 points in autonomous will be pretty helpful in the beginning.

<Guest 49> and very very very simple to execute, but most will not do that
<Guest 52> yeah it is
<Guest 52> good team goes to balance, loses points
<Meredith16> any points in autonomous will be helpful
jeremypg399 has left the chat
<Guest 49> instead of scoring 8, most teams will fail at attempting 12...
<novatose> what are your guys' thoughts on a 4 ball hybrid?
<SuperNerd256> We're going for the middle hoops in autonomous.
<novatose> just in any goal
<Guest 49> someone on the alliance needs to put the bridge down
<Guest 52> putting down the bridge is harder than many teams may guess, though
<Guest 52> there's more force required than people probably thought on day 1
<IndySam> There will many bots who wont be able to climb onto the bridge
<Guest 49> A simple wedge bot could tilt it down
<Guest 49> for someone else
<SuperNerd256> Is that considered aiding in balance?
<Guest 14> we're using a cim to push it down (which is in conjunction with our design)
<IndySam> I'm glad we aren't playing week one or two
<Guest 49> 6 hours isn't enough to download code?
<SuperNerd256> Our programmers worked while we built.
<Guest 52> same here
<Meredith16> I'm here with 3 programmers and a driver :)

<SuperNerd256> We're using our last year's robot to test sensors.
<MarcS> For weeks?^
<Guest 52> we used last year's to figure out auto-balancing the bridge
<IndySam> build two robots :)
<phoebepatwell639> from the end of build until our first competition
<SuperNerd256> Here's a question: You have a main robot, and a small practice bot base. How do you distribute both robots between drivers and programmers in one week
<MarcS> Build 3 robots. Proto, practice, and comp.
<SuperNerd256> We barely got through this build season without demolishing our 2011 bot.
<Guest 52> lose weight; removing the weight could mean dropping functions from the robot and you wouldn't want the programmers to waste time on deleted parts
<Guest 52> ...
<Guest 52> if they already have it done why do they need more time to work on it?
<Guest 14> testing^
<SuperNerd256> To perfect and tune things.
<Guest 51> we lost about 14lbs on thursday at our first competition with speed holes

<andybaker45> it's the inspector's job to point it out to the head ref, and the head ref's job to call the penalty if it happens

<andybaker45> but bumpers don't weigh over 30 pounds
<grimtuesday> 20 lbs each, 2 sets
<IndySam> we have never had 15lb bumpers
<thefro526> two 13lb sets plus 5lbs in robot parts
<schreiaj> I think what Dustin was pointing out was that bumpers DO count for weight.
<andybaker45> yes, agreed
<IndySam> we made our bumpers at Boiler last year because we brought in a 25lb arm
<GCentola1126> This is why we usually do red bumpers and blue covers
<GCentola1126> although the teams that have the flap that switches between red and blue is sweet!
<BrendanB> Its annoying when you work hard to follow rules that others break and get away with because their are no consequences
<schreiaj> Yes
<andybaker45> you could build a whole robot
smitsmcgee has left the chat
<swan217> I've dont that!
<andybaker45> with only 30 pounds of custom parts
<swan217> *done

<Cormier> AM challenge?
<alecmataloni111> @jsneer That looks awesome, btw
<IndySam> Lots of stupid questions
<BrendanB> Jack nice robot!
<jsneer> thanks
<BrendanB> Can't wait to see it at GSR!
<alecmataloni111> I really like the speed controller placement up the back.
<andybaker45> no
<andybaker45> yes
<stevend223> ex. you can't take apart the pg71 gearmotor and use the motor
<andybaker45> yep
<jsneer> that photo was from last wednesday, so we have covers on our wires and an intake/elevator too
<jsneer> but thanks, designed by sophomores with first time in CAD
<Stogi> gonna shamelessly add this in here btw https://www.facebook.com/pages/Robotics-Memes/107270772736087
<Guest 13> watch the likes increase
<Cormier> Hmm. I wonder if i should buy a huge hige qty of pool noodles and stock and sale them.
<andybaker45> geee... what an idea!
<ahill1625> beaten to the punch
<smitsmcgee> western new york here, we have no trouble walking into a pool supply store and buying noodles in the middle of winter
<BrendanB> Most teams buy them in the summer but rookies have no clue
<Cormier> dont you have them fo sale andy?
<andybaker45> I buy them by the 1000
Guest 16 has left the chat
<Guest 13> do you epic fall pool parties?
<swan217> Just ask Schreiber or me to send them from Florida
<swan217> Year round
<BrendanB> AM distro in florida! :P jk
<schreiaj> Holy jeez, Swando isn't busy tonight
<swan217> I could totally get into that Brendan
<swan217> Define "not busy." Actually at home on the other hand...
<schreiaj> you were whining you were always busy!
<swan217> I'm just saying, who says I'm not busy
<ahill1625> nope
<talkshoe> NEW! - Connect in to TalkShoe Shows / Calls from SKYPE! A simple Skype-to-Skype Call! Click for details: http://bit.ly/TalkShoe-Skype-Connection
<BrendanB> pure win!
<stevend223> their shot looks nice
<swan217> Agreed

<BrendanB> I think it will win a regional but not einstein
Guest 25 is logged into the chat
<alecmataloni111> If they can speed up their 2 point score, then they'll do very well for themselves.
<JacobP79> They'll be like last year, win florida, do fine at champs
<swan217> It reminds me of Hammond '03. Creative, useful, efficient, but totally unnecessary for the game
<BrendanB> What makes it hard for them is that is a steep ramp for a robot to climb!
<smitsmcgee> Every miss is about a 50/50 ball. Every make goes to your opponent.
Guest 24 has left the chat
<swan217> Yeah - 179's ramp is steeper than the regular ramp. If you had trouble getting up the ramp in the first place...
<XaulZan11> 179 doesnt need robots to climb on their ramp to get 3 robots balanced
<Stogi> Relevant https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=107274382735726&set=a.107274379402393.5856.107270772736087&type=3&theater
<GCentola1126> our trouble is we are playing at FLR and CMPs, so week 2 and CMPS.
<GCentola1126> 2 completely different games
<schreiaj> mhm
<BrendanB> Even if it is like the bump non bump robots can't use it.
<BrendanB> I'd be concerned that our bump robot wouldn't be able to climb that.
<stevend223> it'll be ugly with bumpers
<smitsmcgee> it's adorable.
<swan217> Right, but why make a ramp in the first place? Unnecessary complexity, and it implies that they're gonna sit around the ramp all match
<Cormier> hmm.... I recall a team putting up fake orbit balls onto the top of their bot in 2009...
<GCentola1126> so if you do 1519 in 2008...one robot feeds and one scores
rsisk101 is logged into the chat
<XaulZan11> I highly highly doubt 179 will sit on the ramp all match
<swan217> I like the feeder-scorer idea
<BrendanB> Those robots were awesome best first year on a team and we make 2 robots... fun year!
<smitsmcgee> Those who care enough will either procure pictures or at worst watch the webcasts
rsisk101 is on the call
<jsneer> moar pictures

<GCentola1126> ugh. This discussion always turns ugly
<Meredith16> Does it matter?
<swan217> nope
<stevend223> karthik does nothing but build a robot for 6 weeks
<stevend223> any conversations with karthik during that time arent really him
<Cormier> MORE PIZZA
<GCentola1126> 3 foot long subs, alex?
<BrendanB> What's hard it the whole mentality of sports (kids play coaches coach) same goes for FLL students work coaches don't work on the robot.
<Cormier> i had 3" today.
Guest 26 is logged into the chat
<swan217> Who gets more inspired? The kids on a successful mentor-built team, or the kids on a struggling student-built team? I'd say both about the same
<andybaker45> this is an Inspiration program, not a sports program
<schreiaj> ^
<BrendanB> agreed Andy!
<schreiaj> Andy, if you could call in and just say that...
<Meredith16> Our team values whomever builds our robots!
<GCentola1126> Sometimes, mentors step in becasue things need to get done and there arent enough dedicated students to do it.
<Cormier> hi meredith
jeremypg399 is logged into the chat
<Meredith16> Hi Alex
<GCentola1126> We thank those mentors
<alecmataloni111> Many teams really just want their students to pursue higher education.
<GCentola1126> They have never said anything about Student or Adult coaches either
<Cormier> it felt good to make a part today.
<Cormier> i am at a total of 2 this year.
<stevend223> but in FLL how do you regulate something like that?
<andybaker45> it depends on who you talk to - Lavery has endorsed the adult involvement version very much
<BrendanB> Legos and CNCs are two different tools
<swan217> It's just like Moneyball - The teams with money or mentors are good, but it raises the bar for the other teams to THINK smarter
<JacobP79> ^
<schreiaj> Andy, I'm talking officially come down and said.
<Stogi> http://www.simbotics.org/media/galleries/2012-build-season-week-5
<GCentola1126> I have volunteered at FLL events before, and some of them still accuse winning teams of being "mentor done"
<BrendanB> That is everyones excuse to winning team! ^
<swan217> Plus, how many legos require welding/CNC-milling?
<andybaker45> we sell the gearbox by itself
<andybaker45> yep
<schreiaj> That's a judging item in FLL< we have to ask them questions to determine that.
<schreiaj> (re students did the work)
<IndySam> nope, that's just the gearbox with a 9015
<thefro526> Just realized that
<thefro526> I'm dumb
<thefro526> sorry
<ahill1625> if 816 wins everything i'll complain that you just pulled it out of your fro
<smitsmcgee> it look tie-dyed
<BrendanB> it looks like the same stuff on rollers

<thefro526> What's Up Aren?
<thefro526> 816 Doesn't Win Events
<Guest 14> camera

<BrendanB> Honest question. Who is at the stage right now?
<IndySam> us
<schreiaj> ^ He is the 1%
<IndySam> us, we were driving and shooting today
<BrendanB> hahha ^
<smitsmcgee> yeah, we have a completed, driving robot except for signage. but we are by no means done.
<swan217> Definitely driving & practicing this week. Accessories on the other hand...
<XaulZan11> website, as well
<andybaker45> noon?
<Meredith16> Just do website now...
<stevend223> i did website teh day it opened
<XaulZan11> some of our new websites aren't quite done meredith
<andybaker45> so does WFA judging group - no past deadline entries
<stevend223> even if its not done, submit the URL, it wont get judged until a week or so before your regional
<Meredith16> It doesn't matter. The website is judged "live" and won't be for a while.
<IndySam> https://www.facebook.com/groups/28126149400/
<ahill1625> they're just using the gearbox
<Meredith16> The CA application asks if you are submitting it for "rookie all star"
<GCentola1126> what about the video?
<Cormier> indy... love those wheels!
<GCentola1126> Becasue we need to submit it, but it doesnt look like it really does anything?
<IndySam> Wonder where those came from?
<JacobP79> Practice
<JacobP79> trust me
<GCentola1126> we took after the Delphi teams, trying to start a training program
<alecmataloni111> I'm involved with the continued outreach that 111 does, but I was not around to see what our submission looked like. sorry that I can't help.
<GCentola1126> so members know what to say to judges and media
<XaulZan11> 111's winning essay is on their website
<alecmataloni111> Really? I had no idea!
<XaulZan11> yeah, our chairman's team was looking for example and yours was the first one I looked for
<alecmataloni111> I'm glad that we were able to help.
<stevend223> autodesk awards are due march 30th i believe
<XaulZan11> march 30th
Guest 30 is logged into the chat
<stevend223> it's the iikos
<XaulZan11> nope
<stevend223> thats what the autodesk document implies
<stevend223> they're only doing it on the national level
<Meredith16> You can submit Autodesk award submissions beginning on Feb. 17.
<jeremypg399> yeah, there is no regional submission to the Championship, with a list of finalists
<stevend223> design AND animation
<stevend223> it used to
<stevend223> now its only on the championship level
<Meredith16> rules are on the autodesk website
BrendanB has left the chat
<XaulZan11> The animation document says that it must be submitted between Wednesday and march 30th
