[EWCP] Halfway There

So, being as we are halfway through the season we thought it might be good to bring in a couple guests tonight. Tonights cast will feature Alex Cormier of TwoPencil Designs speaking about spirit and strategy materials in addition we are happy to announce that Nick Lawrence (yes, the one who doesn’t understand squares) will be joining us to speak about driver practice and training.

If you have any questions you would like asked please let us know here.

Edit: Also, “Like” us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/EWCPcast-presented-by-The-East-West-Collaboration-Project/110990662319846

Seems that my partner in crime missed the most important part, the link.

Call will go live at 9pm EST at the following link: http://www.talkshoe.com/tc/98466

I will definitely be there, and I will try to get some other 103 kids involved as well.

I’ll post on my teams Facebook, get some of our 60 listening in.

Call should be open now for some pre-cast discussion, recording starts in about 30.

Thanks for tuning in everyone!

<SuperNerd256> Our Banebots work, for some reason
<GCentola1126> blasphemy
<smitsmcgee> there's a rochester feud brewin'!
Guest 11 is logged into the chat
<Baselthe2nd> Our banebots worked as well. The ones that weren't bad worked quite bad, honestly.
<SuperNerd256> 4 Banebots 775s work
<karthik> We had some 775's that worked last year, but only temporarily. Every one of them eventually developed a case short
<SuperNerd256> lol
<Baselthe2nd> worked quite well*
<grimtuesday> How long can it take them to take 4 motors and put them into a box
<stevend223> haha our 775's work OOB so far
<grimtuesday> 6 days is somewhat ridiculous
<SuperNerd256> I give them a week, maybe 2
<Baselthe2nd> I mean, we had the same 550 on our arm all year.
<stevend223> its a little less than they say
<rsisk101> 6 days is better than 3 weeks like last year
<stevend223> but still long
<BrendanB> 6 days isn't that bad
<BrendanB> consider how much business they are doing
<SuperNerd256> Yeah, true
<grimtuesday> still though; take motor--->box
<rsisk101> My BB motor order was placed 1/23, still has not processed
<BrendanB> After they put everyone eleses motor in boxes who ordered ahead of you
<rsisk101> 2 550s and 2 P60s
<grimtuesday> hmm, OK, makes sense
<rsisk101> p60-64:1
<JacobP79> Ours just shipped and we ordered on MLK day
karthik is on the call
<rsisk101> when was MLK day
<BrendanB> Thankfully we had banebots gearboxes left over from last year to use
<rsisk101> we don't need ours until next week, so not worried yet
<JacobP79> two mondays ago
<grimtuesday> Oh so you would let me call in again?

<jsneer> oops
<JoeDG> You could probably do the same thing with same thing with small angle
<JacobP79> we're doing 1/8 thick plate around the frame
Guest 29 is logged into the chat
<Guest 11> What software?
<Guest 11> Solidworks?
<schreiaj> I believe Jack uses Inventor
<JoeDG> Absolutely
<GCentola1126> is anyone going long base?
<smitsmcgee> no.
<SuperNerd256> GO WIDE BASE~
<BrendanB> don't say that
<Guest 11> Why wide = better?
<Guest 12> We're going wide based
<jsneer> that is assembled and rendered in solidworks, but i had to cad the individual pieces so other students could view/edit them
<smitsmcgee> long base here, centrola
<jsneer> *in inventor
<Guest 11> I see. We use Autodesk Inventor here at 639
<jwfoss> long, but not 38" is what we ended up at
<Baselthe2nd> Probably less wide-based than 2009, I think. Flipping issues and only 3 balls at a time being factors.
<JoeDG> If for no other reason than 3 on the bridge, I think you have to go widebody
<BrendanB> my long probably has a bigger pickup than a wide
<SuperNerd256> If you do it right, it won't flip over
<Guest 26> narrow base or wide base! just shrink the entire frame!
<GCentola1126> with an intake on the wide side, it would seem easier to acquire balls
<Guest 11> Blow your mind and go SQUARE base
<schreiaj> I got around that with some interesting tricks
<jsneer> if i had a choice, i'd use soldiworks, but the school has inventor so...
<Meredith16> you don't have to go wide if you can go sideways
<JoeDG> Even so, its easier to aim
<thefro526> ^^^
<schreiaj> you got crab Meredith?
<GCentola1126> so bomb squad is doing swerve again?
<BrendanB> Wide still won't get in a corner with the bumper rules
<Guest 28> very
<Guest 28> very evry
<Guest 11> hahaha
<lawrence1503> There's a solution for corners
<Meredith16> just an observation. I can't say!!!
<schreiaj> aww you're no fun
<Guest 11> We have an angled front on the treads, but even with that we should be fine.
<JoeDG> We don't have a problem with a wide 8WD with 4" wheels, and our bridge tipper can double as a wheelie bar on the offchance that we tip
<Meredith16> Ha. Austin is lurking here keeping me in line.
<ajones16> haha
<GCentola1126> so...barrier or bridge then? It would seem beneficial to be able to do both but some people swear that they only need the bridge
<lawrence1503> ahahaha
<Guest 11> That was hilarious
<XaulZan11> 16 without the 3 wheel crab wouldn't be any fun
<jsneer> clairification, 18.5" if we were to go over the barrier but we decided not to anyways
<JoeDG> I think you need both. Bump for speed of crossing field, bridge for bridge points
<Baselthe2nd> 27 righting themselves using their arm in 2010 was pretty epic
<Meredith16> we were kind of happy with 3 plus 1 last year

<SuperNerd256> I liked 16's robot last year, however I wanna see how they do a 3 wheeler going over the bump/bridge.
<jwfoss> meredith, what wheels did you end up going with?
<schreiaj> Meredith have you been in talks with Iowa's resident lunatic?
<Guest 11> That's a good deal
<schreiaj> (aren)
<BrendanB> we have comp carpet
<Meredith16> 3 wheels went over the 2010 bump just fine. You know I can't tell you what wheels we are using. (I actually do know...in case you were doubting)
Guest 30 is logged into the chat
<Meredith16> Aren has gone to ground - full competition mode I think
<SuperNerd256> But the 2010 bumper wasn't the same as this year's ones
IanCurtis is logged into the chat
<Guest 12> Calibrating those sensors was very simple
<schreiaj> Lemme just say Aren is SPECIAL this year
<SuperNerd256> bump, not bumper
<schreiaj> I'm hoping he's trolling us
<Meredith16> Aren is bringing a rookie team to midwest and I am bringing 4...
<XaulZan11> We know Aren isn't going to have a turret this year...I think because all the 22 motors will be used in the drivetrain
<schreiaj> I also really wanna know how Nick is gonna drop a square this year
<Guest 28> weight I think
<Guest 11> I think a lot of people disagree...

<Guest 11> I know the entirety of our veteran members hate the new manual

<Baselthe2nd> I preferred the old, longer manual too. It was more clear.
<JoeDG> I think people just need to get used to the simpler manual, and using common sense rather than having everything spelled out
<GCentola1126> SIMON!
smitsmcgee is logged into the chat
<lawrence1503> Cmon Andrew :P
<JoeDG> If you weren't expecting a long definitions list, you wouldn't need one
<schreiaj> I think that spelling out everything is good
<karthik> Who's version of common sense are you we using?
<SuperNerd256> 550's aren't as bad as 775s
<karthik> *whose
<schreiaj> it is a CYA thing for the refs/inspectors
Guest 31 is logged into the chat
<Baselthe2nd> It took me a good 5 minutes of looking to realise there isn't a definitions list

<GCentola1126> but it was an awesome move
<Guest 28> if you can program a reliable a-bomb in hybrid or auto then you should just program your robot to shoot into the goals
<JoeDG> I think that's almost just to make the game more spectator friendly
<GCentola1126> its doable
<JacobP79> From 30 feet I can hit the backboard, sometimes
<BrendanB> i can see a few bounce into the low/mid goal
<Guest 26> its very doable! we have a few kids who have been doing it easily... 1 every 5 throws
<Baselthe2nd> I mean, you really need a lot of velocity on the ball. It's got quite a bit of air resistance.
Guest 42 is logged into the chat
<ahill1625> i can easily whip full field
<Guest 36> If you can make it from half-court actual basketball, you can do it here

<ahill1625> making it though, yeah.....
<Guest 41> make sure you're human player is a baseball player :P
<XaulZan11> throwing the ball full court isnt the challenge...its actually making it into the basket
<IanCurtis> An orbit ball is definitely draggier than a basketball
<IanCurtis> get some nasty flow going on with all those gaps
<JoeDG> On that topic. Do you guys have tips on convincing a team that's historically done it wrong, that they NEED a consistent drive team?

<GCentola1126> ^yes
<stevend223> ive seen some teams have it and have it work
<Guest 12> We had a student coach last year (1985)
<stevend223> its a person-to-person basis, but also sometimes you need a mentor/teacher-coah as a liability issue with the school
<Meredith16> she's cleaning the tub?
<stevend223> *coach
<Guest 12> He was the Dean's List Award winner
<Cormier> nothing wrong with student coaches. i realy believe in actually keeping a solid drive team from year to year. start all memebrs as a freshman that
<Cormier> work well and understand each other. they will be amazing the 3rd and 4th year/
<stevend223> i think having your drivers be different grades is a good idea, that way you'll never have someone out there who it's their first time in competition
<thefro526> One of the best coaches I've ever met was a student coach
Guest 43 is logged into the chat
<GCentola1126> I had a great time with my Drive Team last year
<Guest 12> We had a Freshman arm driver, Sophomore human player, Junior coach and Senior drive train driver last year.
<schreiaj> my FTC team uses student coaches. They keep trying to drag me out there but I keep coming up with convenient excuses. They do better when I'm not ther
<Cormier> well see if you make it back there this year centola.
<Cormier>
<GCentola1126> cormier, im hoping to
Guest 33 has left the chat
<Meredith16> most FTC teams use student coaches. Not us...
<Guest 26> yes, drive team chemistry is the most important part! and not just with each other, but how they can get along with other teams on your alliances
Guest 12 has left the chat
<Guest 26> you could have a great driver who doesn't listen to the other alliances and can become very hard to work with, which sadly, happens a lot!
<lawrence1503> ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
<Cormier> what ya making for dinner meredith? and btw i am getting bags in the mail tomorrow to ship the towels in. so they will go out Tuesday.
<lawrence1503> I can't stand drivers who don't listen to anybody
<schreiaj> Depending on the match I might go out there if they have a rough strategy that match
<GCentola1126> Last year, I know my drivers listened because they did the stuff I told them too even when I messed up
<GCentola1126> ...like deployin gthe minibot on the wrong tower
<GCentola1126>
<lawrence1503> lmfao!
<Guest 41> Nick, can you name examples of some really good drive teams?
<lawrence1503> 1114 did that at Midwest in 08
Guest 44 is logged into the chat
<lawrence1503> G41, any of 1114's drive teams
<Guest 36> Wait, I have a question: shouldn't the coach be doing most of the talking?
<Guest 36> Not between driver/operator?
<lawrence1503> Yes G36
<Meredith16> Alex, I saw the towels. They look great! Not really "cooking" tonight - cuties, avocados, salad, cheese toast...
<Baselthe2nd> I have trouble giving up control to a coach. I've driven once and realised it simply would not work competitively.
<Guest 26> the coach can start to become another person between the main robot functions, which are between the driver/codriver
<Guest 36> So what should the ideal coach do?
Guest 45 is logged into the chat
<Guest 26> coach is big picture, driver/co-driver are detail within your robot
Guest 46 is logged into the chat
<Cormier> i need to write down some excuses i can say when she gets home. have any?
<Guest 45> i am kinda late...
<Meredith16> Ha. None.
<schreiaj> 45, that's cool. We record em for a reason
<Guest 36> So coach should only say things like "get that tube and hang it on this peg"?
<Guest 36> or is that still too specific?
<GCentola1126> Thats how we were for FLR
<Guest 45> yep, will listen in later in the week
<Meredith16> Our coach, Brandon, is so likeable (makes up for cranky drivers, huh, Austin?) that he can pretty much take over an entire alliance & they don't notic
<ahill1625> hotrod? lol
<ajones16> Haha yes, exactly..
<Guest 26> As my team's coach, the two drivers work with getting specific things like ball to ball collection and shooting placement,
<Guest 26> but the coach looks at where the defense is, where to go after those collecting and shooting steps in a match
<Cormier> ya know what grind my gears?
<schreiaj> bad shifting?
<Cormier> how many teams that have a clueless coach, even worse when its an adult. when all they do is just sit there for a better view. dont say a word or anyt
<Guest 40> you cant find the droids youre looking for?
<Guest 26> @Cormier, I agree completely! it can become frustrating in matches when that happens
<lawrence1503> Hey Cormier, that sounds familiar
<MarcS> Thats when you(as a coach) takes over the whole alliance.
<Guest 45> when they are made of plastic?
<schreiaj> In the case of FTC, if my students are following the strategy we outlined and it is working I am quiet when I'm there
<Cormier> even worse when the clueless "coach" causes a penalty for leaving or walking around or being on a cell phone.
<GCentola1126> what if your team has a student coach policy and an incumbent coach?
<Guest 41> what are some examples of really good drive coaches?

<JoeDG> How do I convince a stubborn team that they shouldn't switch out drivers match to match?
Guest 47 is logged into the chat
<schreiaj> That's more a team issue
<thefro526> Will address those questions in a few minutes
<Cormier> ya dont pick them in eliminations...
<SuperNerd256> QUESTION: How do you convince your mentors to have only one set of drivers (and a set of backups) for the competition, not to have everyone drive.
<XaulZan11> How do you practice? Just run the bot for 10 straight minutes scoring tubes or shooting balls or run 2 minute 'matches'?
<stevend223> just tell them that its crazy that a single driver shouldnt be getting as much experience as possible
<thefro526> especially Joe's
<schreiaj> it has to do with your team culture and changing that is...hard

<Guest 29> Nick, does your 700 hours practice include time between Champs and IRI? If so, how many hours did you put in up to champs?
<GCentola1126> Our team does student, but I don't have a problem with either argument
<lawrence1503> G29, Champs
<lawrence1503> just shy of 700
<GCentola1126> they are loud
<Guest 26> i don't have a problem with either, as long as both sides (student/mentor) knows their place
<Baselthe2nd> Zondag
<Cormier> how many of the 700 on the practice bot vs the real bot?

<lawrence1503> Look up, 35,000 people
<Cormier> also, how fast do they get to the sticks
<lawrence1503> "geez"
<smitsmcgee> yeah
<smitsmcgee> also, the shock factor of playing the elite teams together, when youre used to only going local... crazy.
<lawrence1503> yeah dude
<ajones16> I hated that..
<GCentola1126> I did that once...not proud of it....
<smitsmcgee> the "poison" list
<SuperNerd256> Once both teams on our alliance deployed onto the wrong poles we agreed on, and we both ended up getting 1st and 2nd!
<GCentola1126> I usually try to avoid portraying myself and our team as "that team" than people blacklist.

<ayeckley> Had the exact thing happen to us at CMP in 2010. No show - were on the practice field instead of a qual match
<lawrence1503> eek
<JoeDG> Do you keep these blacklists year to year? Because the leadership and character of teams can change
<Cormier> ya know how hard it is to get a slot on the practice field!
<lawrence1503> We'll revise it if they make a better impression
<ayeckley> Rookies, so explained how important it was to show up on the field.
<lawrence1503> ok
<lawrence1503> acceptable then
<schreiaj> I've got teams blacklisted barring major leadership changes as I disagree with how they do things
<MarcS> Coaches should talk to each other, not each others drivers.
<smitsmcgee> its buyant.
<smitsmcgee> buoyant*
<GCentola1126> but its random, you cant elect to be the satellite team
<XaulZan11> Do you blacklist teams because you don't agree with their policy or ethics. Or do you blacklist teams that have a direct impact on the field?
<XaulZan11> IE: they don't listen or follow the match strategy

<Guest 61> or a feeder
<Guest 47> @28 yes
<Cormier> doesnt PINK do that?
<chrisisme> We built wide because we didn't want to rule out something as important as three on the bridge by design. Wide robots don't ALWAYS tip...
