Examples of Great Defense

Hello everyone,

I’m trying to make a presentation for some drivers about how to play good defense in Power-Up. I’m looking for some examples of great home side defense.

Think actions like portal sniping/blocking, pinning a robot at the portal, blocking portal-cycles to the scale.

A brief description of what robot to watch when would also be appreciated.

Thanks,
Thayer

Not trying to toot our own horn but…

(Left side of screen, bottom portal)

Around 1:45 into the video, we recognized 2085 was human feeding and had already stolen a cube from their portal when it was dropped a first time (off stream), and after that we just sat in front of the portal to block them. When they came over again, we backed up slowly to bait their driver into dropping another one and then stole it too and scored it on the scale.

Half of it is on the drive coach to recognize opportunities, and the other half is on the drivers to be fast enough to seize them.

1836 defends their switch against 1011 while filling the portal, sniping a cube and stealing one from 1011’s intake.

1778 had a great time playing defense in the finals at PNW. See this video from 1:06 on: https://youtu.be/6Mh6B6eY-JA

I had video of you already but must’ve been a different match or feed, because this shows you guys way better thanks so much!

4096 in QF 1-3 at Midwest. It is towards the end of the match in the bottom left.

294 @ Areospace Valley in Final 1.

They completely shut down 3309 making the scale basically a 1 v 1 battle.

At the Alamo Regional, the 3rd seeded alliance (5572,5986,4219) managed to upset the two best switch bots (2nd Alliance, 4639, 4063, 4734) through some great defense to keep their switch.

We owned their switch that entire match, the loss came down to one vault cube for the levitate, match 3 is a better example.

You should see 1089 and 2016 defending opposite alliances in finals at MAR. 747 also does a great job defending in the semis.

Here are some match vids:

QF3M1 (1089 & 708)
SF1M1 (747 & 2016)
SF1M2 (747 & 2016)
F1M3 (2016 & 1089)

Although they lost I think this is a great example of very good defense played by 5951 against 1690 and 5554:

look at their games in the semi-finals and the finals of the Israel District Championship

Agreed, PNW had some great defensive strategies. PNW Finals was fun to watch !

Defensive play of the year right here.

world-class defense right there for sure

We only see this kind of defense played at Champs.

Actually, really bad defense there. I get why someone might think that but the penalties plus the fact they scored is just bad defense. Look at 1817. Good defense done right. 2 big things about good defense, zone based, and the quick turn. People going into this game never playing defense are going to have a really hard time either being aggressive enough to make a difference, or being to agro causing penalties galore. It takes a lot of practice to know where and when to make a stand in someone’s null zone without getting penalties. Just to be clear the quick turn I mean a quick 90 degree turn to let the oncoming bot hit your side and try pushing you out of the way. Burning battery for them, and letting side to side movement from mech or swerve an easy thing to counter without loosing ground.

That’s the joke. This was garbage defence and the teams who persuaded them to play like this against 254, 148, and 59 should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. In no other match did they play like this.
