Extendable Arm

Wondering if anyone could provide some insight on what we should use to lift our robot of the ground ? Air brake, gear box… A little lost

What we’ve used in the past and what I’ve seen people use is a hook and winch system. Something like an elevator or arm to help place the hook and the winch is what does most of the heavy lifting. I can send more info but hopefully this helps your team get started. And of course there are other systems you could use and I could help research if you’d like. Just let me know!

The winch sounds like a good idea but what would the components of the arm be and what do i need to be able to lift the robot? I was looking at pneumatic cylinders but anything past 6 inches is crazy expensive. Thanks man

Have you used this before? It comes in handy. You’re also not likely to be able to lift the whole robot using pneumatics but I could be wrong.

Also should mention, the following lists are rough. I don’t know the nuances of robots I had no part in making. DO NOT go off the list and try to build it.

The components change if your definition is different or have a different design.
Like a simple arm for me is comprised of:
1x tube
2x bearings
1x rope
1x winch
1x hook
1x motor
1x gearbox
some standoffs
Assorted hardware

But the 2016 148 robot arms are like
2x rope
2x motors and gearboxes (IDK how many they have, maybe they even PTOed)
1x Some sort of winch
4x tubes
8x bearings
4x pneumatics
4x hooks
some standoffs
Assorted hardware

Do you see how this gets confusing when we try to answer the question?

Yes that looks like a good starting point. As a new team (obviously I don’t know where you guys are at resource wise) you’ll quickly find out how important research and prototyping are. People throw around terms like “arm” as an oversimplification of systems like a climber because really there are infinite ways to make an “arm”. Pneumatics can get messy especially for new teams (again, you may be capable I have no clue) and may not be optimal for a climb mechanism. We’ve used a big ol’ CIM motor with a hefty gear ratio for the winch. Keep working at it, start with you hope to accomplish with the arm and do lots of prototyping to zone in on a final system. I’m always open for questions if you need more help!

I was asking the OP. I can’t really help until some details are ironed out. I’m trying to get them to think about it.
