Favorite Early Build Season Resources

With kickoff right around the corner, I’d be curious to learn what everybody’s favorite early build season resources are. I’m compiling a list for 6045 to reference, and want to make sure I’m not missing anything valuable. Specifically I’m looking for strategic white papers, week 1 prototyping videos/resources, etc.

The top resources on my list right now are:

  • 4481’s build blog
  • XRC game simulator (planning to have the students play this a ton)
  • Everybot (even if we don’t directly take ideas from it, it provides some insight into what many robots will be capable of doing)
  • Many other Open Alliance teams (I’ll be a little selective for what I choose to promote to the students on my team)
  • Ri3D teams (only some of them offer valueable resources)

Would love to know what others like to reference!

Thanks for the mention.

Something to note that @Ben_Martin has posted: We are bringing back a lot of the crew from FIRST Capital Ri3D in 2019-2020 but moving locations to Illinois and will be called Ri3D Redux this year.

I’m extremely excited as I really believe that all of us are going into Ri3D with the mission to create content that will be beneficial to many FRC teams. I’m sure that team plans on building an awesome robot and big shoutout to suppliers for providing some awesome components but truly it’s out goal to provide benefit to teams regardless if they are new, low resource or those who are looking to be an alliance captain this season.

Also with Open alliance we are brining back the Open Alliance show each Tuesday after kickoff until competitions start with about a dozen OA teams detailing everything that goes into their teams build season.

Shameless plug: we are working on a Whitepaper that details how our strategy department works, including resources and presentations for teams that have minimal experience with strategy (Design theory, past game analysis, etc). This will hopefully get posted on CD by our winter break (12/23) We are also hoping to be more active on CD, posting updates related to strategy and possibly more resources during build season. We still need to get some things polished up, but we hope it will be a helpful resource for teams around the globe this coming build season.

I think checking out all build blogs is productive, wide range of ideas, and the FRC Encyclopedia is always a key resource for kickoff

Update: We have published it! You can find it here, and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask in that thread.

Game tests. It helps to design a robot that complies with the rules. I’m not talking about the nitty gritty allowable measurements and types of motors, but how many game pieces you’re allowed to hold, where the robot starts the match, etc. Terminology if also important from the beginning.

I’ll plan to compile the game tests – along with other game specific resources – like I usually do in a thread like: All the RAPID REACT resources
