Favorite Match Video

Last month, I had the opportunity to be a videographer at a local off-season FRC event. Given that this was a smaller event, I was allowed to get closer to the action than I would have been during an official competition. So I took advantage of the the relaxed nature of the event and decided to get some different types of shots that would normally be impossible to get. For example, during the first finals match, I created a continuous shot where I slowly walked around the field, trying to keep the camera focused on the center of the field. I was shocked by how well it turned out. The whole thing seem choreographed. As one interesting thing left the frame, something else would immediately appear to replace it. While it’s not a great shot for determining how the teams are doing in the match, I think it does a great job showcasing just how exciting matches are down on the field. It captures the intensity and speed of the game in a way that the traditional top-down view isn’t able to. For all of those reasons, this might be my favorite match video and will likely be the first video I show people when I’m introducing them to FIRST.

What are some of your favorite match videos and why?

The “clean robot video” series by @rZhov. The great camera work and the high quality footage help me understand the dynamics of the robots and how they interact with the field. Sometimes these videos even point out the design flaws of certain mechanisms. In short, they are great documents for strategic design.
