I just wanted to apologize to 201 for knocking you off the hanger in our QF2. It was definitely not intentional. Our driver’s station was on the opposite corner so we couldn’t fully see what we were doing - on top of that, a hit right before that somehow flipped our gyro. When my driver tried to drive away, we ended up driving into the hanger instead. I hope we did not cause any damage to your robot. Good luck in Houston.
Yeah, an updated gyro with a higher slew rate limit is definitely on the table after that little debacle.
Props to 74 Team Chaos for playing such solid defense on us.
On behalf of FEDS201, first of all Congratulations on winning Chairmans. And there is nothing to apologize. It was an accident and they happen. Everything is good and we would love to partner with you anytime.

Talking to the pit crew it sounds like no real damage was done. You guys have an amazing robot, good luck at worlds!
I wish we were going. Finances, covid, and school conflicts mean we were forced to decline the invite. However, that just means some other very deserving team gets to go, so it’s all good.
We saw that happen from the other side of consumer’s. There was an audible gasp on our side. It was dramatic, I’m glad the robot recovered.
We also had to decline going to worlds for similar reasons.
Also congratulations on winning chairman’s.
I wonder, are they still going to allow you to still complete your interview for chairman’s as a video interview, or because you can’t go you don’t get to do the chairman’s?
Yes, we will still be able to compete for Chairman’s. We will be doing a virtual interview and then tuning in on Saturday. We also have a Dean’s List finalist that we will be cheering on.
It stinks to not be going, but we’ll make the best of it.
As other members from my team have said, no need for apologies. Thank you for speaking to our drive team after the match to clear up any confusion. Accidents like these are normal are to be expected. Congratulations on Chairman’s once again and best of luck competing for the HoF!
Question for 1718 on the technical side, and if there is any learning here that the community can gain. What gyro were you using that lost its mind after taking a big hit? Looking at the match video it’s hard to see what would cause a gyro to behave like that.
Your right, I also do not see any big hits. I can’t speak to the gyro (maybe Tom can), but I can tell you what I think happened. With approximately 44 s left in the match, 3534 begins pushing us with our wheels off the ground on one side which I suspect upset our robot’s orientation. However, if we can set up square to the field when this happens (intake facing our side) we have a gyro reset button. This was used after 3534 stops pushing us. This happened with 38 s left; you’ll notice a short pause with the robot in that orientation. At that point we are driving okay until 25 s left in the match when we hit the side of the hanger structure and 74 begins pushing us with our wheels up off the ground. We never got to reset after that. The little bit of driving that you saw was my driver trying to figure out which way the robot is moving - this being made more difficult because we couldn’t fully see what we were doing in that part of the field from out driver’s station. I don’t know if that’s enough for the robot to lose its position on the field, but that’s what it appears to me to have happened. I don’t have the technical knowledge about the gyro use to say for certain.
I just re-watched again before posting, and I’ll have to check with my driver, but you’ll notice a pause with the intake facing away from us right before we drive into 201. Watch the robot being squared up at that point (15 s left), only facing the wrong way. If they tried a reset in that orientation there, then the robot would be 180 degrees off causing the issue. I think the gyro was slightly off from the push (notice odd path they took to get there after 74 moves off of us) and they accidentally tried a reset with the robot facing the wrong way.
What gyro are you using?
Is it normal / expected that you need to reset if a wheel goes off the ground?
Why is that? I am pretty sure most other teams I know this is not the case.
No. In practice, we’ve only had to ‘reset’ the gyro (we use a Pigeon) on a few occasions this year, and those have only been when we slam into something very, very hard. This was my first best guess when the driver said the robot went the opposite way he told it to.
I was unaware they attempted a reset, but Craig is the drive coach and the man on the scene. I think his analysis is the correct one.
The robot is perfectly fine. Shoutout your to drive team for being super professional before and after that. I shared good luck wishes with them before each match and when I went to pick the robot up after that match, they apologized and were super helpful. It was a pleasure playing against you guys.
