Our team is currently wondering how many teams will be attending Saginaw valley when all is said and done. In the past it’s been around ~160 teams, and we are wondering if Covid has had a serious effect
It is 160 again this year
In 2019 MSC had 200 teams. IIRC the total number of teams in Michigan has dropped by just over 90 teams since then. Therefore MSC went back to 160 teams.
Actually In 2019 MSC only had 160. In 2020 it was going to 200 but due to Covid it went back down to 160 this year.
Thanks for correcting that. I knew MSC was at a 200 number, just missed it by a year (that didn’t happen)
And it is probably a good thing. The hallways would get so crowded at 160 teams, I have no idea how they thought 200 was a good idea.
There was a thread here while back that discussed the change back to one championship. The thread delved into the percentages of districts and regional attendance.
The intent being to give as many teams the experience of a championship. MSC is the same, they want to give as many teams the experience of going to a major event.
What is the usual district point cut off? ~77 pts?
IIRC its around 64-67.
In 2019 the cutoff was 79.
2019 - 542 teams - 33 events
2022 - 464 teams - 26 events
So you will likely see a bit of variation from that number because of chairman’s winners and such, it’s a pretty good number to target.
My guess it will end up being around 66-69 with the lesser amount of events.
You’re looking at the wrong numbers. The highest team not qualified was 79 because they declined. 66 was the cutoff in 2019 (I know this because we barely missed by 1 point originally and made it in through declines).
However, looking at historical data, 2017 had 461 teams at 24 events vs 464 for 26 events in 2022 and the cutoff was 61. I think 61-62 will end up being the cutoff this year.
I am totally game for a bigger MSC, but they need a bigger venue, or different organization. My concern is pre-covid @160 teams there were times when the hallway was a literal crush of people moving to/from the pits.
Now if they want to make an official human one way human paths, using the outside path (possibly providing a cover in case of bad weather – then I am also game to try 200 at Saginaw Valley – but half the time they don’t want people using those doors.
The 2017 cutoff was 60 (my team missed it on tiebreakers, but 573 made it in with 38+22 points).
In any case, I agree with your 61-62 estimate. A couple more teams and a couple more events means more potential for Chairman’s award winners below the cutoff, for one.
