I’m curious if anyone remembers FIRST-a-holics Anonymous? I’m equally curious if anyone wants to try to bring the organization back and make something out of it again. My memories of this organization were that of so much fun when I was a young high school student. I also remember meeting so many fun and interesting people, many of which I still keep in contact with to this day. So is anyone up for this, or does someone already have something going? Let me know.
Can you give some more details? I, for one, have never heard of it. Is it a chat thing, or a meet in person thing, or an e-mail thing? Was it just talking to others, or did you do more? The basic idea sounds kinda fun tho…
It was all kinds of things, basically making a nut out of yourself in the name of extreme FIRST. When it was happening, there were limited pins and whatnot that people had, and only the nuttiest knew how to get them. I think it could become so much larger and so much more fun then it was. It’s just a matter of getting some people to work a little I think.
i rember that being around my first year and somein to my second and i always wanted to join or to see what it was about. I would like to help start it up again that would be a lot of fun.
This is stretching my memory a bit as well as dating me, but the “FIRST-a-holics Anonymous” never existed as an organization as far as I can tell. Way back when (I believe it was the 2000 season), Kate Leach was handing out buttons saying “I am a lifetime member of FIRST-a-holics Anonymous” (there may have been someone else also as there are two sets of initials on the buttons; the second set is JAT). If anyone’s really interested I could take a picture of my button but it’s really not that exciting. There was a bit of a joke about the fact that as a member of an anonymous organization you’d wear a button announcing the fact.
I also believe there was a FIRST-a-holics website at one point. This web site really was just a listing of people in FIRST and their AIM screen names. This was before Chief Delphi had a field for that information.
So, in short, there never really was a FIRST-a-holics organization (at least any that I know of). There were buttons and a website but that’s about it.
This is a far reaching tangent, but it still warrants discussion. FIRST-a-hol: some sort of ethanol based lubricant? The product of the fermentation of thousands of left-behind, half-finished bottles of caffienated soda we are bound to produce? A lovely beverage made from combining desiccants with carbon choke cleaner? What is this mystery beverage upon which my addiction is based?
Matt you are correct, Kate Leach and someone else who I also forgot created buttons and passed them out at competition. The website had peoples names and their screen names. Also on the website were poems about FIRST and other random stuff like desktop images and such. Almost everything the website had is now covered by CD. If you do a search on Google for it you can sometimes find parts of the site on geocities.
Lora Knepper Used to have First-a-holics.com or .org or somthing like that. I had an email address from it and everything. But its gone now, she had all sorts of neat stuff on it.
The idea sounds awesome. Considering I’m defiantly just over a week away from reaching an insane level of FIRST devotion, if I’m not there already (what are the symptoms of FIRST-a-holisim? Dreaming about your robot? Spending at least 1-2 hours on FIRST related sites and or subjects every day? Learning all there is to know about programming language so you can talk to the robot? :yikes: ).
