This fall, we are planning on hosting an offseason competition, but we would first like to gauge whether other teams would be interested in participating in our event.

Here are some key details:
Where: One of the hosting team’s high school’s, within the San Mateo Union High School District.

When: Saturday & Sunday, 13-14th November 2021

Please fill out this interest form if your team is interested in participating in our event, (this is not the official registration form). The interest form will close on August 7th 2021, so please fill it out by then if you’d be interested in partaking in the first year of this event!

I have a few quick questions, if you don’t mind:

Have you secured a field and FTA for this date?

What is the expected registration fee?

How many teams do you anticipate being able to accommodate?

How many volunteers do you expect to need to run this event?

I’m excited for more offseason events in CA, but I think there’s a lot of logistics work that needs to happen first, and with COVID constraining a majority of the Northern CA events into a ~5 week period, I fear the potential for uncoordinated event overlap may introduce some unexpected difficulties.

While it hasn’t been announced (and I have no info), based on the dates of other CA offseasons that have been scheduled, I would bet that Madtown Throwdown, should it happen, will be that weekend, and they typically use the NorCal field and Chezy Arena. If you haven’t already gotten a field secured, I suggest trying to get that solved ASAP.

As an aside, I hope you call the event the BREAD Bowl. I didn’t come up with that name, but it’s the right one.

I filled out the interest form. Congrats on putting together an offseason competition!

Would you consider a September competition?

Our October/November are jam packed with offseasons and hosting Davis Youth Robotics tournaments.

  1. We are in the process of securing a field and FTA for this date, if we are unable to secure a field we have a fully functional wooden field in which we can use.
  2. The expected registration fee is $300, but if we use a wooden field it will be lowered.
  3. We can accommodate about 40 teams, we are limiting the number of members that each team can bring to 15 or 20 students because of COVID-19 (the number might change depending on COVID-19 guidelines)
  4. We expected about 60 volunteers, and about 15-20 would have to be experienced volunteers.

Hi,

Thanks! But a September competition for us would be pretty unlikely.

Hi,

Thank you for the advice!

That weekend is typically the MadTown Throwdown. If you choose a different weekend there is a full field available, with electronics, for rent. Just need to ask Janet McKinley the sac/central valley RD.

Well, uh, I feel old.

Echo what all of the other posters have said, especially what Mike and Andrew had to say about timing.

Lots of luck with putting something together, and if you need some advice I think y’all know how to reach me.

A couple weeks ago, 253 and their colleagues reached out to ask some really great questions about our experiences running an off-season FRC event (Triple Helix co-hosts the Rumble in the Roads in Newport News, VA along with 1610 and 5957). Based on the quality of the Boba Bots’ questions I bet this will be a fantastic inaugural event.

We published our responses here in case they’re of benefit to others.

At first glance, this is an awesome resource. Going in to the 6th year of planning an offseason, I can definitely say it would be nice to compile our own internal knowledge into such a document.

Thank you, those resources were very helpful to us

Can teams that did not fill out the interest form still apply for registration if/when it opens?

yes, however registration still has not opened yet because our event is still tentative, however we still would encourage you to fill out our interest form for now
