As a senior that has just gotten home from nationals, I see may days as a member of T3 coming to an end. So I am looking to the future. I have heard that many seniors currently on teams, and even full blown FIRST-aholics, will be joining me next year at Michigan Technological University. So this is my first call to anyone interested in starting a team there next year. Any current students interested in advising next year, any sposors looking for a team or another team, and any engineers please respond to this thread so that we can start planing now. And remember, until a cure is found, this is the only way to control your FIRST-aholism.

Despite all the naysayers, team 221, Michigan Roboworks, has been reincarnated in the great snowy north. We have adopted Houghton High School. Myself along with a few other college students from such distinguished teams as 68, Truck Town Terrors, and 27, Team Rush(OSMTech Academy), have started a new team for 2000. Wish us luck because we're going to need it!

In any case, it looks like a great school, and is high on my list of possibilities…especially if they have a FIRST team! ;o)

I spoke with a member of MI Roboworks at nationals and am under the impression that:

  1. MTU is not giving them a lot of supposrt, if any.
  2. Their team does not have enough room for all the students going to MTU next year that have expressed an interest in staying involved with FIRST.

Hmmm…well, if I end up at MTU in 2001, I’d be more than willing to give you a hand. Before then, if you need a hand with anything, feel free to ask, I may be able to help. :o)

Adam-

If my conversations with Anthony are any indication, you are right on both of your observations. While my personal opinion is that MI Roboworks ought to get MTU more involved, I respect MI Robowork’s desire and ability to call their own shots. I have personally offered to help them get MTU fired up about a team, but they have declined the help.

So… you still want to start an ‘official’ MTU team? I think you should - theres Hancock high school right across the lake. Also Tech has a great shop that is dedicated to student competitions that would make a great skunkworks for a FIRST team (getting in there is a whole other story, but, hey we have to start somewhere…).

Here’s some food for thought. The LAST TWO Woodie Flowers Award winners are MTU grads! Hows that for some firepower to help get a team cranked up? I would be willing to talk to anyone you want me to to help, and I’ll bet you could get Kyle Hughes to do the same. With the number of FIRST-experienced students at Tech (there must be dozens) and some vocal graduates like myself and Kyle, I think you will succeed.

I think it would be a good idea to propose the idea of a team run by senior-level mechanical engineering design students as part of a 2nd semester class. When I was there we did this with SAE Mini-Baja and ran it like a business (a successful one too :)). Then you get an infrastructure to run the team so you can still participate without killing yourself.

Let me know what I can do to help.

Ken

Thanks for the great suggestions! You have a better idea how we could get this done then I do.
I will definitely get back with you on anything you could do to help. Right now I am still basically trying to judge the kind of support I can get from current FIRST students. I was really inspired by the success team 461 had with former FIRST students as advisors and would like to create another team in their image.
Once we get enough students together, we’ll definitely come to you. Stay in touch.

You are right, as of right now MTU is in no way supporting our team, but that’s just because we didn’t ask them to, yet. You are also right that there are a lot of graduating seniors who would like to join our team next year. I talked to several in Chicago and Flordia. As of right now, MI Roboworks would never be able to support that many college students plus a decent number of high schoolers on the team with our resources. So, what we would like to do is start another team up here at the college. I’m pretty confident that we could get MTU to support this second team. I think it would be wonderful to have two teams in the area. I’m glad to hear that there is a lot of interest in a FIRST program up here and I think with the help of people like Ken Patton and us students up here already we could get a MTU team going. I’ll try to post some more messages on this soon.

Sounds good, Justin. (I believe I was one of the people that talked to you at nationals)
As for formally trying to get a team together, I, personally, am not ready for that. But in an attempt to keep from doing my high school homework, I would like to get a start on Dean’s homework.
I am, however, interested in finding out what kind interest would be generated by my suggestion and, judging right now, it seems to be really good. Also, any help from people like Ken Patton or Kyle Hughes would be greatly appreciated by myself and by many others going to MTU.
As soon as we find out who exactly is intrested, we can start the real work. Hopefully, we can get a plan going over the course this summer, as a rookie team’s, and any other team’s for that matter, obsticle is time.
Anyone who can offer any kind of support, please feel free to email me or post it here.

Hey Dave,
Remember, this is a TEAM.
I’m looking for teammates, not just help. It’s going to take a lot of dedicated people to get a team up and running for next year when we have no sponsor, no engineers, and no students. Keep in touch so we can all decide what we’re going to do.

Adam,

It’s really great that you are so interested in FIRST for next year. Being an alumni of team 68 myself i know what a grave situation you are in. I left that team in 98’ to start my own team while still in high school, and the tradition continues here at Tech. We are, and have been planning on, getting Tech involved. Ken Patton, Kyle Hughes and countless other people are very good friends of mine, and will be very helpful. Getting a Tech team started shouldn’t be too hard, we just have to decide on how you want the team to work. Since we are already established I think it would be really helpful if we can work together. Please e-mail me at [email protected] as soon as possible. I’d really like to talk to you so we can start making critical team decisions for 2001. Thank you.

Remember!

As students at Oakland Community College or Oakland University, team #1 is close by.

Also, I might attend Eastern Michigan, where I will probably try to lend a hand on Team 66.
Any other colleges close by to teams?
Such as Kettering and team 70, perhaps?

Just because we are seniors doesn’t mean we can’t come back and rock the world of FIRST!

For those of you that don’t know me well, I’m not only an engineer at TRW. I’m also a graduate student at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, of course). I was trying to get a team going at U-M last year but the effort ran out of steam for a lot of reasons. However, if there is enough interest, I would be happy to get the effort going again.

Just a few words for those of you going to MTU and wanting to do FIRST. I went to Tech, and please remember that Houghton/Hancock is a small town. I’m not sure that they can financially support 2 teams in such a non-industrial area. Also, make sure that you are doing it for the right reasons. Don’t end up with 20 college kids and 15 high schoolers, where the college kids are just trying to continue what they did in high school. FIRST is a high school experience. Let’s keep it that way.
