FIRST Music

I’ve noticed that at all FIRST events, they play the same music over and over. One such song is Sandstorm. Now, I’m wondering, how does the FIRST music system work? Do they have to pay for every single song?

And am I the only one who thinks they should get more music? Such as…maybe not play a song more than once? I’m really getting tired of Sandstorm.

I noticed that too. After my first competition i had that song stuck in my head lol. Just thought id add that random fact.

well I know atleast 2 years ago at epcot, when I was going up to the field on the main stage… I saw a dj and started talking to him… dj’s do not have to pay for their songs

they just play them

I’m sure it varies from regional to regional but when a dj plays a song he just has to purchase the cd and play it

ATleast i’m pretty sure thats how it works

ps. sandstorm might always be played cuz its a popular song… tho I admit overplayed… when you have to play 10 hours of music you run out of things to play… its like any radio station… they may play the same song 2 or 3 times in an hour if its popular enough. Usually dj’s won’t do this… but sometimes playing the same song twice is amlost unavoidable

at the sbpli regional this year i saw a guy djing off of an ibook with itunes. It looked like a rather small playlist as well. For BattleCry4 this year however we had a playlist that was about 18 hours long. I dont think a single song was repeated either.

Sandstorm is definitely overplayed. When we were at the Great Lakes Regional last year, I had that song stuck in my head from when I went to sleep, to when I woke up, and from then on, until about 2 days after the competition was over.

Seems to me that all DJs use an iBook with iTunes.

Nelly was another popular song artist. I can’t recall which song that was played, but I got sick of the music for the '03 season. Maybe things will be better for '04.

Ive used my ibook with itunes to dj many sucessful times. It works out great.

maybe we could bring a suggested playlist? or a CD of mp3s you would like heard to competition? i mean, i can’t promise the dj would play them, but at least then he’d have a larger selection.

although, the early 90s dance music is always fun

do you think maybe if every student on every team at every regional pooled there music then you could create a full 3-day playlist?

iBooks are great to DJ on. As for music, I think FIRST should be able to accept songs that kids want played.

When sandstorm first came out that song was played like 10 times at KSC. Then when the No Doubt song Hella Good came out it was played wayy too much at nationals, i remeber hearing the bombsquad theme song a whole buncha times one year at nationals too. Hey maybe we could make it easy on FIRST just make a list that has all the songs we want then they get an iBook and send it to all the event, put it on random and there you go it could run itself!!

so maybe we should start a playlist thread? like post whatever songs you want heard at FIRST events. i’d be willing to keep track of the songs that people post and compile at least a SEMI-DECENT playlist which could then be sent to FIRST, or created for the competition and just brought by CD (or 2 depending on size) to the regionals of your choice.

FIRST’s DJs need to get more DDR music in their mix. DDR music is awsome!

I have a whole CD dedicated to the DDR music…

David Kelly and I are talking about the possibility of setting up an XM or Sirius radio and just letting it run at IRI next year, but change the channel once in awhile. This way you have no idea what songs are coming up, and less chances of people getting mad.

FIRST does have an accepted playlist for the regionals. If you want songs played, make a list and supply to FIRST. Just remember that there are many people at these events with varied likes in music. Try to be upbeat without offending and have varied music styles. It can’t hurt to try.

I have yet to see a DJ that doesn’t take requests at regionals. You just go up and ask them to play something. I’m sure they judge whether or not they can play it.

Also if we make a list of good music to play, we should also make a banned music list. Furthermore, the first entry would be that stupid “Barbie Girl” song.

JosephM was so kind as to take my idea and put it into action, so here’s the thread to create a playlist of sorts for FIRST djs. add your favorite songs to the list :):

maybe FIRST should try to work out a deal with Apple, that would be kinda cool.
