I was watching what I believe was a new Monster Garage tonight (July 26). The challenge was to rebuild a Blazer to race in the Pike’s Peak Hill Climb. Good show…but the thing that really caught my eye was a t-shirt that one of the team members was wearing. I saw what looked like a gear with a blue glow…the competition shirt from '99. Sure enough, the back of the shirt was given a very short one second appearance with the FIRST logo visible at the top.
The contestant was Sarah Graneir (sorry, probably butchered the last name), an engineer from Manchester. Anyone know this person? Was she a former student in FIRST? A current mentor? Someone that works within FIRST itself?
Just thought it was pretty cool to see members of the FIRST community start to pop up on shows like these. Anyone want to take over Junkyard Wars with me??
Kev
P.S. My apologies if this is in the wrong forum, but I don’t think it really fits anywhere else.
Ooooh this is not cool … I missed the show!! And I would’ve loved to see that episode!!
Does anyone know if there’s going to be a repeat of tonight’s episode … maybe tomorrow or another day?? Please tell :ahh: !!! I want to see it!
But that sounds pretty awsome … its great to see people from FIRST anywhere! And its also a great way to spread the message of FIRST … I bet there were several people who watched that show going, “I wonder what the heck FIRST is?” Evetually, they’ll come around!
I knew it! I was watching that last night and I heard that she was an engineer from Manchester, NH. Now when I hear Manchester and engineer, I automatically think FIRST, but it wasn’t mentioned in her bio so I didn’t think she was involved. Wow, that’s awesome.
Same here, but I didn’t notice for the entire episode that she had any FIRST gear on. I must have mentally dismissed the possiblity at the bio. I’ll definitely be watching the repeat for that.
horray for TiVo-like digital recorders! Missed it the first time I watched that episode (actually, I dosed off midway through), but I think I’ll go watch it again with some breakfast in front of me.
[edit] For clarification, its on Build Day 5, but Day 6 (the last day) by the show’s calendar. Unless I missed it ealier, it happens at the very end when they’re recieving the tools. However, its quite small and I wouldn’t have recognized it as a FIRST logo had I not read this thread. It almost happens as the truck with the fenders arrives, but the camera cuts her off at the last second.
When she was plasma cutting the frame, she has it on underneith the suit. (DAY 5)
When they deliver the headers for the exhaust you can see it through the headers.
I havent seen it yet, but Im gona try and catch it next time its on. It would be sweet if they got an all FIRST build team and make a robotic car of some sort that could preform tasks from some of the compititions… on a larger scale of corse :-p
One team 294 mentor almost made it on the rock-em sock-em robots episode, but ended up getting kicked off. Oh well, maybe we can get Andy on Monster Garage instead
She was wearing an Intelitek Hat or shirt or somthing at one point, and during her bio they showed her in a lab with all the robot arms and stuff they make. I guess she works for them, we had some of thier robotic arms at my high school, its a company from manchester.
I can “confirm” that Sarah is a mentor of team 40. She works at Intelitek, a company in Manchester NH, and she graduated from WPI, thusly explaining the WPI/Intelitek/First logos.
Yay… An end to the rumors. You should show her this thread, and see what her reaction is. I know if a whole community of FIRSTers got all excited about seeing me on TV, I would think it was cool.
Elgin you will never make the TV lol maybe you will appear of AFHV lol and i watched that Monster Garage Episode and i didnt even notice the WPI hat or the FIRST shirt… :yikes: lol But like right after the episode ELgin IM’s me and says it wa s her and i was like :ahh: didnt notice lol
Jeez…I just happened to stumble upon this and I’m flattered!
lol, no really…Yes, you are all pretty much correct
I’m an engineer, I’m from manchester NH, I went to WPI, I work for Intelitek, I’m a mentor for team #40 the Trinity Pioneers, I have participated in FIRST since 95.
I actually submitted all kinds of cool FIRST video and stuff for my bio, but they chose to use only my racing backround, since the challenge was a racecar.
I also couldn’t wear our team shirt (which i had planned on) cuz the past couple of years our shirts have been red or white, both colors you’re not allowed to wear during a build because they don’t show up well on the cameras.
If you guys have any more questions fire away…now that I’ve found the posting I’ll try to keep up and reply!
he’s not any of the badass they make him look like on tv, he’s super nice, and ALWAYS goofing off…lighting stuff on fire, throwing fireworks at people, throwing things at the cameras, making redneck mullet jokes…he did very little work even though he was there most of the time. which was fine the cuz team really gelled together and we had everything under control at all times.
it was really fun to work with him and he’d stop to help out anytime we asked…weld stuff, give an opinion , whatever. i was kinda afraid going out there about what he’d be like and he’s just a guy loving life and trying to have as much fun as possible.
