It’s meant to be seen from a distance, so I would suggest keep it simple – just your logo/name and team# as large as possible. Looking at your shirt, it’s really unclear what 4008, 4602, & 6976 are all about (those appear to be unrelated team#s?).
Seeing Team 177’s “Spirit Flag.” always brings a smile to my face. Not sure it’s really the kind of thing you’re looking for, though. I’m been digging around trying to find a picture but somehow it’s eluding me.
3128s flag for reference. Same design on both sides.
Using that layout as inspiration, mabye out of personal bias but also because I find it rather clean, I would recommend maybe coming up with a similar version with the Bronco head from the shirt design front and center and the team number right below horizontally. The team name can be included if you wish but I would worry having 3481 BroncBotz on one line may leave the text a bit less visible and enlarged than you wish. Definitely go ahead and play around with those design elements until you find something you’re happy with.
Some other considerations to take into account are the size you want your flag and subsequently the flagpole. I know the biggest pain point I can recall after receiving our new flag was figuring out a half-decent flagpole that wasn’t too bulky (RIP any attempt at an LED flagpole ). Otherwise, we used an Etsy shop that may no longer exist anymore. If you do happen to find Creative Flag Inc on their though and a shop owner named Alejandro though, it more than likely is the same person
I’m sorry I didn’t pay enough attention to what I was reading. I thought you were changing your flag from a landscape orientation to a portrait orientation.
With that in mind here is 846’s flag:
It’s two nylon flags sewn together so it’s visible from either side. As you can see, pretty simple with only the logo and team number. The tiny print at the bottom does have the team name, school, city, flag/logo designers and year.
The two arms from which the flag hangs, fold down for portability. They go in between the two flags in a sewn loop. In the horizontal position you see, they’re secured with quick release ball detent pins.
The aluminum piece in the top-center is a C channel that allows for the hinged arm folding and detent pin locks.
The vertical pole is telescopic and you can only see the top part. It’s actually a paint extension pole.
The finials are only for decoration, help retain the flag, and provide a larger surface area if somebody hits the end of the arm.
I deliberately cropped the photo leaving the monitor shown so you’d have some scale reference.
Unpopular opinion but I personally don’t think flags should have numbers, names or slogans. National flags don’t need COUNTRYNAME written on them, it’d be kinda cheesy if they did. I personally think that this whale flag would be so more aesthetically pleasing with just the whale on it, and everyone would still know y’all are the whale team.
An important difference is that there are <200 countries and ~4000 FRC teams. Not many people can name all the countries by looking at their flags. I think even less people could remember the flags from 4000 teams.
Which whale team? I can think of 2–and this one in question is narwhals, which are different from blue whales (both the animals and the robot teams). There may be more.
I don’t have a picture, but if there’s a picture around of 319’s (Big Bad Bob’s) flag, that one is so iconic!! It’s super bold with the bright orange and blue, which makes it super memorable at competitions
Had these made up as car flags (that clip onto your window). The dark blue part was made into a large flag years ago for events. It disappeared and the kids didn’t really want a replacement
As long as the font, color, and scheme are similar to shirts and pit banners, you’re good. Try to make it not too busy. People in the stands will appreciate that.
They’ve come close to being at the same competition before (competing in the same areas at least, and they’ve been at Champs in some of the same years though never in the same division).
And if you think it’s cool for your team’s flag/spirit stuff to exactly match another team’s… it isn’t. At least, not to the teams in question. Particularly if it’s intentional. Something that was brought up in the team number discussion earlier this month is that the numbers are unique, and the only thing guaranteed to be so. Having the number on the flag helps make it clear which team is which.
As somewhat of a flag design nerd, if you want elegance I would point you to the North American Vexalogical Association, who have compiled a nice list of flag design rules.
Sorry, I know that much of this does not apply to FIRST teams’ flags (although wouldn’t it be amazing if we made it so!) … I saw the thread and, as a listener of a wonderful podcast called Hello Internet, couldn’t help but tout my other interests on Chief.
The flag basically consists of a honeycomb design to better suit their name. There are six shaded honeycombs, three on the top, and three on the bottom. The placement of the shaded honeycombs represents their team number, 33, which eliminates the need to put their number on the flag. Each of the shaded honeycombs represents important information about the Killer Bees:
One shaded honeycomb represents the year 1996, in which the team was formed.
Another shaded honeycomb gives notice that it is a founding member of the FIRST in Michigan District
One shaded honeycomb pays tribute to its major sponsor, The Chrysler Foundation.
The next shaded honeycomb shows that the team practices Gracious Professionalism, which is expected in all FIRST teams in all school levels.
The next shaded honeycomb represents the importance of community outreach, which promotes the team and all STEM education.
Finally, the last shaded honeycomb shows that it is an award-winning team. The Killer Bees have won numerous awards in its history including Woodie Flowers awards, Dean’s List Finalists, engineering awards, and finally regional Chairman’s Awards. (I hope that they become a FIRST Hall of Fame team someday!)
I just want to post this to give any team designing their own flag some inspiration. Let me know what y’all think!!
