I was wondering if tiny amounts of fast-dissipating fog are allowed for decoration in the pit.
We would be using a low-powered fog machine with Froggy’s Velocity Fast-Dissipating fog fluid. It features a completely dry, odor-free fog that lasts for about 30 seconds, and I have tested it and found that to be completely true. We’d put the fog machine on the ground and pump it into 1" PVC pipe with small holes drilled in the inner sides, so it won’t drift into other teams’ pits, if it can even get there. My goal effect is “steam” steaming out of leaks in “steam” pipes. By the time the fog gets to the point where it escapes the pipe, 20 seconds would have been used up and 10 seconds would be remaining before the fog completely vanishes into thin air.
Again, I am pumping super tiny amounts at a time to give the effect of small steam leaks from the pipes.
A search of Q&A might have been helpful. https://frc-qa.firstinspires.org/qa/253 (Though… “smoke” was the term I used to find that quickly; “steam” has it several pages later; “fog” brings up nothing.)
Basically… Yes unless it creates a hazard, or is deemed by the event organizers to create a hazard.
Be weary also about the fog fluid you are using. Many of these machines use a latex substrate to vaporize to produce the fog, this can be dangerous to anyone that has a latex allergy. Also as always respect the people around you and the event staff, if someone asks you to turn it off, please do so.
There was more than one team at San Diego doing this (I can’t remember the numbers off the top of my head). The elaborate setup definitely drew in a lot of attention but probably limited the actual workspace.
I have one of these for my dorm room that I actually made a cloud once with Another perk of using this, is that it helps make your pit a lil bit more humid, which can reduce that pesky dry skin or chapped lips that is oh so common this time of year :]
