2023 was a great growth year for 1351, and with our year starting to wind down with the end of Madtown Throwdown, we would like to present our first formal CAD release in the modern era of our team.
Extra info about 1351 design program
Since joining 1351 as a design mentor in 2022, my goal has been to build up a strong and confident design team on 1351, where our students work alongside experienced mentors to develop competitive and well-designed robots. With most of the hands-on design work in 2022 being done by graduating seniors, 2023 left us with brand new students to be trained and an overhaul of the design process and structure. I took on a bit more of the legwork for the 2023 robot design as students learned the ropes and got into the swing of robot design, but as soon as the 2023 season ended our students jumped straight into their own personal design projects to better improve themselves and increase how much they can contribute to design on our team. In the offseason we had two primary design projects: A student-led robot design that competed at the Madtown Throwdown offseason competition, and a mentor-led robot design that was used as training for students to watch and experience the design process of a more experienced designer. Our goal for the 2024 season is to have a student designer in charge of each subsystem on the robot, with a mentor overseeing the total integration of all subsystems. Building up a design team takes time, and we believe we are on the right track.
Here are our main 3 robot designs from 2023:
- 2023 Competition Robot
- Onshape Document / STEP file (more detailed)
- Designed in Solidworks
- 25-75 student / mentor work distribution
- 2023 Offseason Competition Robot
- Onshape Document
- Designed in Onshape
- 99-1 student / mentor work distribution
- 2023 Advanced Design Training Robot
- Onshape Document
- Designed in Onshape
- 100% mentor designed (used for training purposes)
We hope this CAD release is helpful to the community, and if there are any questions, I will do my best to get a team member to answer them.
