2020 FIRST Robotics Competition Regional Awards Show

Apr 17, 2020 | Written by Frank Merrick.

I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe!

As you hopefully know, we’re continuing to award Dean’s List, Woodie Flowers, and Chairman’s Awards this season. We’ll also be announcing our event Volunteers of the Year! Districts are setting their own schedules for announcing their awards, and those should be rolling out soon if they haven’t already. On April 29, FIRST HQ will be announcing the FRC Regional awards for suspended events on Twitch.

We have so many awards to announce that we’re going to be breaking the show into three segments. During each segment we’ll be covering a different set of Regionals. Look for the Regionals you were registered for below and be sure to tune in at the times shown!

  • 7pm Eastern Time - New York Tech Valley, Greater Pittsburgh, SBPLI Long Island 1 & 2, Southern Cross, Central New York, Hudson Valley, Smoky Mountains, Science Park Taichung, Orlando, New York City, South Pacific, Buckeye, Finger Lakes, Festival de Robotique a Montreal, & South Florida

  • 7pm Central Time/6pm Mountain Time -10,000 Lakes, Central Missouri, Oklahoma, Canadian Rockies, Iowa, Minnesota North Star, Bayou, Central Illinois, Seven Rivers, Idaho, Memphis, St. Louis, Green Country, Wisconsin, Heartland, Colorado, & Rocket City

  • 6pm Pacific Time - Arizona North & West, Laguna, San Diego, Monterey Bay, Central Valley, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Hawaii, Silicon Valley, Ventura, Beijing Cultural Exchange 1 & 2, Sacramento, Aerospace Valley, & Orange County

I’m excited to be watching these shows along with you! It won’t be the same as seeing awards presented in person of course, but I’m looking forward to that community connection!

Frank

Interested to see how this turns out, that’s a lot of regionals. At 17 events per hour for three hours there’s only 3.5 minutes to cover each regional, or 42 seconds to cover each of the five awards (2x DL, WF, CA, VOTY). And moving at that pace for 49 regionals in a row seems like it risks getting repetitive for the hosts and audience both. Maybe they could show all the award recipients for a regional at once and then play the winning CA video?

Whatever they do I hope it works out.

I would assume no Chairman’s videos since you submit them at the regional and asking every team to submit one when teams can’t meet right now would probably screw over some deserving teams. As for the presentation, maybe they’ll rotate “MCs” to keep it from getting too repetitive?

Much fewer events but I know Chesapeake district at least is showing Chairman’s videos during the awards stream:
For any FRC teams that planned to compete for the Chairman's Award at any of the canceled qualifiers, please submit a Chairman's video and team photo [...] we will show the team picture and video during the awards ceramony of all winners if you submit one.

Admittedly it would be significantly more difficult to organize Chairman’s videos for 49 regionals than four district events. :man_shrugging:

My student submitter for the Chairman’s asked me for a link.
I was confused as it isn’t “due” until your interview.
There IS a field for the URL to your chairman’s video on the essay submission page.
I told them to use our YouTube channel link.
Had them post to YouTube when it was finished, and put on the USB’s just prior to the flight to San Diego…

I think a video could still be done… but placing that burden now is not reasonable.
Though I would expect chairman teams are able to, and have done their videos…

But I agree…
To keep the celebration event time reasonable, I think there will not be any videos shown.

I do hope the winners upload and submit their chairman’s video URL to FIRST.
It is great to read the essays and see the winning videos!

Aloha

The fact that districts are only announcing Chairmans winners for district events and not the DCMP leads me to believe that Chairmans winners will not get an automatic invitation to next year’s Champs. Since it’s the DCMP Chairmans that matters for that, and (AFAIK) there are no DCMP Chairmans winners this year.

The whole process of awarding Chairmans virtually makes it seem that FIRST HQ has (rightfully) more or less given up on the “postponed” events ever happening. If they had a reasonable hope that they were going to take place at some point, you’d think they would wait to give out the awards in person.

me waiting for fim to announce when theirs is
