2022 RAPID REACT Audience Displays

Written by Matt Pilotte, FIRST Robotics Competition Senior Electrical Engineering Manager

Greetings, teams! Today’s blog today is all about the Audience Display and is our annual sneak peek at a few of the graphics you’ll see on the big screen at your events. Please remember that team numbers, names, ranks, cards, performance, events, or descriptions are for illustrative purposes only!

Match Preview

The screen shown prior to the start of the match is the “Match Preview” screen. This screen introduces the teams in the upcoming match. This is the only place that a team’s nickname is shown, reflecting information provided to FIRST via the Team Dashboard in the Team Registration System. This screen provides information about the team such as team number, team avatar, team nickname, and their current rank in the tournament (if the team has played any matches thus far). During Playoffs this screen changes slightly to reflect alliance information, including backup robots, and the current number of matches that have been won by each alliance.

Real-Time Scoring

Once the match is ready to begin and while the match is running, the “Real-Time Scoring” screen is displayed in the lower 20% of the screen, below the live match video. This screen provides information that reflects the current status of the match, such as team information (including cards), match progress, game timer, real-time score, and match/event information. Each alliance has multiple stats being tracked in the Real Time Scoring:

Hub Scoring: Counts indicate the number of alliance cargo scored in the upper and lower hubs as two stacked trapezoids symbolizing the hubs. In Qualification Matches, progress toward the cargo bonus is tracked by the alliance-colored bubble, symbolizing cargo, and is followed by the threshold indicator. If a quintet is earned in the Autonomous Period, the threshold indicator shows “/ 18” with a yellow background, otherwise it shows “/ 20” with a white background. The number inside the bubble is the progress made towards the cargo bonus (i.e. cumulative number of cargo scored in both hubs). In Playoffs, when the cargo bonus isn’t used, its indicators are replaced by FIRST and FIRST Robotics Competition logos.

Ranking Point (RP) Status: When the cargo bonus is achieved, the bubble is capped with a green checkmark, and a yellow dot appears above the alliance score to indicate an RP has been earned. Neither hangar points nor the hangar bonus are reflected during the match. These scoring components are reflected in the final Match Results screen.

Match Results

Once the match details have been finalized by the Head Referee, the “Match Results” screen is shown. The Match Results display contains a wealth of information. During Qualification matches each team is displayed with their team number, team avatar, card(s) issued to them during the match, their new ranking, and how that rank changed versus their prior ranking; during Playoffs this information is combined for the alliance. If a team receives cards during the match, a graphic is shown to indicate the card and any additive card promotion due to card accumulation (in the example below for Qualification Match 7, 624 had a yellow card carry, and earned a yellow during the match, and in the Match Results the yellow promoted to a red).

Badges celebrate completion of tasks that earned Ranking Points (RP) in Qualification matches (but aren’t worth more points in Playoffs); the cargo bonus is represented by a cargo icon, the hangar bonus is represented by a hangar icon, and match outcome is represented by a trophy. Earned badges are emblazoned with the alliance color, unearned badges are shown without color. In Playoff matches, the RP area is replaced with the number of wins the alliance has won in that series (Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals). Additionally, points earned for the taxi, cargo (combined for auto and teleop), hangar, and any penalty points accrued because of opponent rule violations are displayed. “High Score” text is shown when a new local tournament high score has been achieved. “WIN” indicates the winning alliance (or “TIE” if the match ends with equal score). Detailed results information for each match can be found on the FRC Events webpage.

Be sure to also watch the Match Results screen during Qualification and Playoff matches for special cut-scenes that complete the RAPID REACT presented by The Boeing Company story, once again brought to you by our good friends at AutomationDirect.com!

Seriously who the heck though that color brown would be a good idea?!

This is really easy to understand IMO, which is a nice relief.

I thought the red ball counter was an apple in the first picture of the scoreboard.

That’s all, looks good otherwise.

I honestly skipped over the live scoring display at first because I was skimming and thought an FTC scoreboard had made it in…

EDIT (clarification): Not saying this is good or bad. Just an observation I made

I am not a fan of this on the surface, all the elements that show yellow are normally not positive in nature (yellow card, or match ending). Yellow applied to the alliance seems like it is a negative to the alliance, when in fact they did a cool thing. I would rather this display element get something akin to a green checkmark to indicate the autonomous quintet, vs. the yellow fill.

Also not a fan of the brown, a more neutral gray seems better to me.

I’ll henceforth refer to a cargo RP with some reference to apples.

I’m quite amused by this.

Can we start a petition for HQ to hire 254 to do their displays from now on?

maybe when they add in something useful for RPs.

FIRST usually takes note of peoples reaction so the brown and “positive” yellow will hopefully change, one can hope at least ¯\(ツ)

Nice to see the FIN representation there.

These are still too small for my liking (with most of my experience being behind the driver station glass)

There’s a good amount of horizontal dead space; larger numbers and possibly diagonal would be greatly appreciated.

Overall i think the live scoring is good. I get people not liking the “brown,” but they pulled it from the FIRST Forward season logo, so it’s not just a random choice.

Two tweaks I’d make:

  1. I’d make the lower hub a rectangle, to more closely reflect the silhouette of the goal.
  2. there’s a season banner of the FIRST website that has a navy patterned background. Perhaps people would like that more than the brown? see rough mockup below. a little more busy but I feel the navy helps the other elements pop.

Anyway, just my input. I honestly think it’s fine as-is, but its always fun to tweak.

I was really hoping we might see a revision to the alternate design they tried out in Infinite Recharge that was more multi-cam focussed and simplistic. IMHO I thougt this had a much fresher look. While the alternative one wasn’t perfect the old audience display lower third looks very antiquated to me.

Well, while we’re nitpicking and hoping FIRST notices, I’ve been annoyed (and admittedly much more annoyed than I really should be) for years about how the columns of sub-scores on the match results screen aren’t all right-aligned to allow for easy addition of them. (Like, the blue alliance in these samples has them all right-aligned, but the red alliance has the sub-scores left-aligned.) And, it’s not like I often try adding up the numbers to check the computer’s math (though it has happened in some odd cases, especially off-seasons, since FMS usually has an “adjustment” available which doesn’t show up in any of the sub-scores but is part of the main score and some off-seasons use it for adding in random things). But it’s just the “right” way (no pun intended for once) to present a column of numbers, to decimal-align (the same as right-alignment for integers) them to make it clear that they add up to a total and to make it easier to see relative magnitudes.

(For further reading, I recommend the article “Grids of Numbers” from the excellent book Practical Typography.)

But, I suppose if the alignment of match results is my main complaint about FMS this season, I’ll be a very happy man.

I really love the alternate design too, and I feel thats the direction FIRST should ultimately move toward.

What?!?!? No match analytics powered by AWS?

Wasn’t in the budget after all the money was spend on RFID research and development.

image image Is not good the Trophy should be at the top followed by the ranking points goals. Otherwise its good for info

Has anyone seen these cut scenes yet, or are they not available yet?
